Somewhat related but OT, I don't think (given decision to decline his option to chase max players) Rockets made a mistake foregoing Parsons in favor of Ariza

I don't see him as a trade-able asset. I see us having nothing even approaching a shooting guard prospect

his cap hit won't preclude us from re-signing all of MCW, Noel, and Embiid even if all three magically become All-Stars and even if next year's pick is a clean Len Bias, his next contract would be kicking in when Bledsoe's is expiring

Saying he's a good asset is saying you think he's likely to retain surplus trade value at a 15mm salary. is this really true?

we've talked about MCW's trade value at length and his salary is ~5mm

well, I think this was assuming we trade MCW...what we have is not necessarily as important as what the other team needs. I'm not sure how a backcourt of MCW/Bledsoe works, but it'd be interesting to see it shake out. I guess they'd switch men on defense? Bledsoe has been a shooting guard due to where he's played, but are we so sure he's not a PG?

Have to factor the possibility of losing our first-round pick into this too, no? But man I would enjoy watching him play

*we descend upon Hinkies green room where he's clipping marijuana buds off a row of plants on his windowsill. there's a telephone handset sitting off the receiver on the table adjacent to him*

Hinkie: "I can't wait to smoke these buds that i'm clipping. I got the seeds cheap and grew them all by myself."

*clips bud; packs it in the chamber; liftoff*

Hinkie: "ahhh, KJ kush, so dank, yet energetic."

*snips more buds*

Hinkie: "This Grant plant is so musty, my eyes are beginning to water."

Image

*moves down the line; snips a fist sized marijuana bud off a long stem*

Hinkie: "Embiid weed. I'm melting."

Image

*moving down the line, Hinkie snips a patch off an exotic jungle hash bush*

Noel: "Sam, did you just cut my hair?"

Agent on the phone in the background: "Sam, how about it, Bledsoe for max dollar bills?"

Hinkie: "You're still on the line? Pass. The only thing I pay retail prices for are my Skylanders trap team collection."

I think that would still be unlikely and it would mean Noel is a one-man wrecking crew and MCW took a big jump so I'd be ok with that

I am really curious as to what the hypothetical partner for MCW looks like for people who think Bledsoe wouldn't fit

Michael Redd or something?

nah, you're right. you can't make it perfect. just always found it weird to have your shooter be shorter than your point

Which top 5 picks next year should we be watching for? I'm assuming we should be targeting someone who can shoot.

i just think of bledsoe as a lillard-style PG. attacking player who shoots most of his three attempts off the dribble or if big goes under screen on high P&R

but i didn't watch him play much last season admittedly. did they use him in more catch and shoot type spots?

not really, most of his 3s came from the top of the key in the exact situation you described (off he dribble when big went under screen on high p&r). but that is a more difficult skill to teach/coach than catch and shoots, imo

a shootah in like Klay, Wesley Matthews, Bradley Beal, young Joe Johnson. Basically a real good shooter.

during the summer league interview 2 days ago Brett Brown was like, "we got a bunch of young athletic guys that are long, can play hectic defense and run the break. that's kinda the flavor now. eventually we'll need shooters, that's something I learned with David & Timmy."

that is true, but some players are weird and shoot better/more comfortably off dribble. maybe bc they grew up always having the ball

i just wonder what you do with MCW if you are going to run offense through bledsoe like that. i think there's a more realistic chance bledsoe is more effective in an off-ball role, but i see it as a possible awkward fit offensively

wouldn't be concerned as much defensively as people have pointed out

my ideal 2 is a deadly shooter guy who can be dangerous/efficient as a catch and shoot guy off screens while another player initiates the offense, but also is smart passer/ball mover and can be effective if you ask him to run P&R as a secondary ballhandler. also he has dreamy eyes and does 3 point goggle handshakes with his dad at the draft
