The kids aren't alt-right - a politics thread

Erdogan gave a speech at NATO early this morning blastingthe UN Security Council (his statement is somewhat correct but I worry about his motives) where he also went after the YPG:

Erdogan also took the opportunity to call on world powers to stop supporting "terrorist organizations," including the Kurdish People's Protection Unit (YPG). The US calls the YPG a "moderate rebel group" and has given it military support and arms through the Syrian Democratic Forces alliance fighting ISIS militants.
"Some say ... we do not recognize the YPG as a terrorist organization because they fight against Daesh," Erdogan said, using the Arabic acronym for ISIS.

He pointed out that Jabhat Fatah al-Sham, the militant group formerly known as Jabat Al-Nusra, was also fighting ISIS and was internationally considered a terrorist organization.
"They fight against Daesh. Just because a terrorist fights another terrorist, can you call them a good terrorist? At least that's what we are seeing in Syria and Iraq," he said.

His logic is lacking here; one militant group fighting ISIL does not mean someone else fighting them is ALSO a militant organization. the YPG is one of the best hopes for moderation in Northern Syria, from what I can tell.,

Heard early this morning that the President has no intentions of putting his businesses in a blind trust. I guess we can look forward to meeting at the White House for discussions and negotiations, just like the Indian contingent that took some of that valuable time from the transition to talk about a new hotel with the Trump name on it.

Can we start the count until Trump will have an actual press conference? Recall, just like everything else he threw on his opponent, he has not spoken to the press (and tweets don't count).

I don't think he'll ever do a press conference. At best, he'll do interviews like he did with 60 minutes.

Standing Rock protestors getting sprayed with water hoses. Something needs to be done by the feds to step in and stop North Dakota and Morton County from doing this to protestors. People should definitely call their congressperson. President Obama and AG Lynch need to do more. He is entirely too slow to act here. Local law enforcement has shown an incapability to peacefully secure the area for protesters (willfully so, IMO).

fwiw, last Monday the Army Corps of Engineers delayed a decision on the pipeline;

Washington, D.C. – Today, the Army informed the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe, Energy Transfer Partners, and Dakota Access, LLC, that it has completed the review that it launched on September 9, 2016. The Army has determined that additional discussion and analysis are warranted in light of the history of the Great Sioux Nation’s dispossessions of lands, the importance of Lake Oahe to the Tribe, our government-to-government relationship, and the statute governing easements through government property.
The Army invites the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe to engage in discussion regarding potential conditions on an easement for the pipeline crossing that would reduce the risk of a spill or rupture, hasten detection and response to any possible spill, or otherwise enhance the protection of Lake Oahe and the Tribe’s water supplies. The Army invites discussion of the risk of a spill in light of such conditions, and whether to grant an easement for the pipeline to cross Lake Oahe at the proposed location. The Army continues to welcome any input that the Tribe believes is relevant to the proposed pipeline crossing or the granting of an easement.
While these discussions are ongoing, construction on or under Corps land bordering Lake Oahe cannot occur because the Army has not made a final decision on whether to grant an easement. The Army will work with the Tribe on a timeline that allows for robust discussion and analysis to be completed expeditiously.
We fully support the rights of all Americans to assemble and speak freely, and urge everyone involved in protest or pipeline activities to adhere to the principles of nonviolence.

The count is just a reminder that this was one of the issues that the Trumpeters kept chanting during the campaign. Hillary was not talking to the press, she needs to have a press conference (it was part of the 'she's gravely ill saga'). I was going to gin up a 'he said she is X' versus 'Donald really does X' list, but it is really long when you start to think about it.

It's nuts. The anti-Clinton crowd was convinced throughout the 90s that the Clintons were renting out the Lincoln Bedroom to foreign nationals, but somehow they're okay with this?

Trump used his congrats call from the Argentine President to lobby to approve permits for a building there, as reported in La Nacion (US press doesn't have this access, imagine that).

a Berner in congress may join the Trump administration;

Stephen Bannon, Trump’s chief strategist, reportedly likes Gabbard because of her stance on guns, refugees and Islamic extremism along with her ability to invoke strong anti-establishment populist sentiment on the left.

Gabbard did not join the majority of her Democratic colleagues in the House by co-sponsoring gun control legislation this summer. She was one of 47 Democrats who voted in favor of a Republican-sponsored bill that requires refugees from Iraq and Syria to receive background checks from the FBI.

Her district is geographically diverse and rural, it includes all of Hawaii except for Honolulu and some of its suburbs.

Last week, 169 Democrats signed a letter condemning Bannon’s appointment by Trump – but Gabbard was not among the signers.

cballs was right about her, btw

Desperately hope not. A President Pence scares the shit out of me, even if he'd have to spend a good chunk of his time doing damage control.

Who would believe one word the media says or writes about Trump at this point?

That ship has long sailed. The MSM as a whole overplayed their hand badly during the past year and have zero credibility.

BTW.......Tulsi Gabbard is a total star in the making. I'm sure she'll be ostracized from the party after meeting with Trump.

yes, I would believe the media. you can't ignore reality just because it doesn't fit your narrative. the polling models got it all wrong, that's different than the media being dishonest.

What story did the MSM play on Trump that was false or affect their credibility? You were pro-Trump the whole time, so I'm sure the stories stick out more in your memory than mine.
