Erick Erickson ‏@EWErickson
It's not just that they plagiarized Michelle Obama's speech; they plagiarize the section on honesty, character, and integrity.

This.

It's also a bit troubling that a potential first lady's speech about her husband, which is expected to be from the heart, was exposed as being inauthentic. Not good.

I also think it has become more about the ridiculous reaction of the campaign to the plagiarism.

So can we agree that it's a near-mortal lock that it was one of the Trump kids (or Kushner) who was responsible for that portion of Melania's speech? Otherwise, it makes no sense that they wouldn't just fire the person and move on. But if they can't be fired...

You may be right. I think it was Kushner, who has been writing some of Trump's speeches.

It's low hanging because there's 1000 other articles to be written about the shit show of a RBC. Like how more than enough state delegates wanted to change rules so they could vote by raising hands. That's a bigger deal than 30 words in a speech that wasn't written by the person whoa on her third language.

Everyone knows the campaign is a mess. The Republican party isn't going to come out and condemn anything and picking on a potential first lady is crass and further disenfranchises the voter

The rules fiasco isn't interesting to 98% of the US population. Hell, I'm a fairly savvy political observer, and it's only mildly interesting to me (partly because one of my former bosses was caught on camera throwing his credentials to the floor). Conventions are always run by egotistical blowhards who will do anything to make sure it goes exactly how they want it to go--this isn't really news, except that it's so rare to see in Presidential conventions nowadays.

It also does nothing to diminish the average voter's opinion of Trump. Sadly, this does.

It's also what happens when your kids and their spouses are your top advisors and speechwriters. Hire some real speechwriters.

This is the guy who claims that he hires only the best people.

Holy crap, I think we all get and agree that the thoughts and ideals are common ones. I would imagine the vast majority of BSG was taught that hard work pays off and that you should always keep your word and treat people with respect. And, as adults, who among us does not want our children to reach for and achieve their dreams?

BUT, Melania Trump used the exact fucking words Michelle Obama used to express those thoughts and ideals. And our rotund former Attorney General should know that intent is not a prerequisite to plagiarism.

picking on a potential first lady is crass? so, what, you just let it slide then?

and for what it is worth i think there has been a lot of coverage regarding the vote yesterday. i sat in my car during lunch and that talked about it a good bit on NPR. they covered it live on my way home yesterday afternoon too.

The concept that picking on a First Lady is crass is an awfully ironic statement to make in this particular election.

I generally don't care to defend the media, but I think the Trump campaign's weird handling of this is as much of the story at this point.

this is what i'm poorly alluding to. pick on the issue that its the campaign let this happen instead of a deluge of memes that has quotes attributed to Melania.

in the end it doesn't matter cause with Trump there is no such thing as bad publicity.

Trump must be LOVING this. He craves the attention, positive or otherwise. It's all the same to him.

Wright State University in Ohio has pulled out of hosting a Sept. 26 general election presidential debate. The debate will now be held at Hofstra University in New York.

The university is citing worries around costs and increased security.

"Today I requested that the Commission on Presidential Debates release Wright State University from our obligation to host the first Presidential debate on Sept. 26," President David Hopkins said in a news conference on Tuesday. "This has been a very difficult decision to make but I am confident that it is the right one for Wright State University at this point in time. Wright State has in a responsibility for the safety and well being of those on its campus and in the surrounding area. We all take this responsibility very seriously. Over the last few weeks we have had a growing concern over what it would take to guarantee the safety and security of our campus."

Come on. The CNN pundits were bending over backwards to give poor Melania a pat on the head last night. "It's not her fault." "She did a great job." "I feel sorry for her."

It was insanely condescending, in all reality. No way in hell does a female attorney such as Michelle Obama or Hillary Clinton get a pass like that. Especially one that claimed in a national tv interview that she wrote it herself with "as little help as possible." But because Melania is widely regarded as being nothing more than eye candy? "It's not her fault." Sure.

So outside of the Twitter memes (which are a fact of life anymore), what have you seen that picked on Melania? Everything I've seen has been focused on the campaign reaction and the identity of the speechwriter.

MSNBC did the same thing. "A disservice to Melania" they called it. Joy Reid was the only one to place blame on her.
