Man, this is a very wrong opinion.
He's one of the most important and effective public officials of the past few decades.
He just kinda hung on a bit too long and became the awkward drunk, kinda racist uncle who should have retired a few years earlier like Willie Mays with the Mets.
Who said there were no second acts in American lives?
I should have just gone straight to the random thoughts thread. Here's an interesting take on the fitzgerald quote, though it comes from a dubious source. The quote itself was never printed in context, and the article posits that Fitzgerald, who often wrote about drama, was stating that Americans often skip the second act of a typical three act play, rushing right from the statement of the problem to a resolution rather than dealing with the worrisome part where you wrestle with the actual implications and nuances of what needs to be faced.
I can see how that interpretation could also apply for Giuliani. As for the original post my other comment would be, why not both? I admire his ability to take on urban problems that many, probably most, regarded as intractable and produce results, though of course other factors also have to be considered in the progress made, and there were negative consequences as well. And, my stomach is constantly turned by his vain and self-serving treatment of a national tragedy, and that he uses the forum given to him by his moment in the sun to foster hate and resentment. That at the time he seemed the steadfast and equanimous leader that the situation needed only makes it worse.
