Man, this is a very wrong opinion.

He's one of the most important and effective public officials of the past few decades.

He just kinda hung on a bit too long and became the awkward drunk, kinda racist uncle who should have retired a few years earlier like Willie Mays with the Mets.

He's a fascist, pure and simple. So he walked down the street on 9/11. Big deal. You're right he should have retired before people saw him for what he is.

The military is the secular (was?) force that would roll back the religious backed parties and even overthrow governments from time to time. It looks like the end of the Ataturk era to me. Very, very bad news.

No idea how this is going to affect our relations, probably not very well since Erdogan has already claimed we were behind it. NATO is another organization that doesn't need any more pillars rotting out from under it, if the Turks left it would be catastrophic for NATO since they are the leading edge of the Moslem refugee crisis.

Over the longer term, if Turkey continues to become more Islamist as a government, we might see a return to the dueling Sunni houses...the Ottomans on one hand and the Saudis on the other. More intrigues within intrigues, more possibilities to turn them on each other.

As for peace in our lifetime, forget about it. The mid-90s were the closest thing any of us will ever see. We're much closer to 1913 than 2013 as well.

I worry greatly that our #1 ally in NATO is being taken over by a man using religion to coalesce an impenetrable force and basically end democracy.

I think it's way past clear that's what he's doing and it's been clear for some time. It's up to the Turkish people now. Does Ataturk's legacy die or do the Turkish people write another chapter in its greatness. I think it's the former at this point.

My brother in law is flying drones for surveillance in Germany and he told my wife that we should keep a bag packed and there's a lot of extra stuff going on. I'm not sure what that means, but I wish he wouldn't tell her stuff like that the week she had a baby. He's new at it so I suspect it's just stuff that often happens when there are major events and he's just being nervous because he's never seen it before, but I don't really know. It wouldn't surprise me if Switzerland became a target. I guess everyone has money here, even terrorists, and they may not want to upset the system here, but a attack in Switzerland would send a message that an attack in France or Belgium would not.

I'll laugh if it was Ivanka's husband who wrote Melania's speech.

Washington knew.

I have already intimated to you the danger of parties in the State, with particular reference to the founding of them on geographical discriminations. Let me now take a more comprehensive view, and warn you in the most solemn manner against the baneful effects of the spirit of party generally.

This spirit, unfortunately, is inseparable from our nature, having its root in the strongest passions of the human mind. It exists under different shapes in all governments, more or less stifled, controlled, or repressed; but, in those of the popular form, it is seen in its greatest rankness, and is truly their worst enemy.

The alternate domination of one faction over another, sharpened by the spirit of revenge, natural to party dissension, which in different ages and countries has perpetrated the most horrid enormities, is itself a frightful despotism. But this leads at length to a more formal and permanent despotism. The disorders and miseries which result gradually incline the minds of men to seek security and repose in the absolute power of an individual; and sooner or later the chief of some prevailing faction, more able or more fortunate than his competitors, turns this disposition to the purposes of his own elevation, on the ruins of public liberty.

Without looking forward to an extremity of this kind (which nevertheless ought not to be entirely out of sight), the common and continual mischiefs of the spirit of party are sufficient to make it the interest and duty of a wise people to discourage and restrain it.

He knew because he saw the bitterness between Adams' Federalist and Jefferson's Democratic-Republicans. Divisive parties are not new. It's hard to put a proper perspective on thing since we have the internet and social media we are seeing this phenomena nonstop.

Massive explosion reported in Ankara, reports it's at a state-run TV building.

Look, people tell me all the time, George, go for a third term. My two terms are the best terms, they're truely fantastic. I don't need a third term, do you know how much money I make selling tobacco? I have the most money.

They tell me how great my speeches are, simply the best. I have the best words in my speeches.

We are watching a slow motion train wreck. But the question is whether it's merely a wreck of one of our political parties or whether the wreck is going to bring the whole country with it.
