I don't normally watch awards shows, but my wife wanted to put the golden globes on tonight, so we did. What's the point of watching if they just dump out of half the interesting things they are going to say? And did Matt Damon honestly win best actor in a comedy for the Martian? Is that an indictment on comedies or is the Martian just a laugh riot?
Ridley Scott accepting the award for best comedy/musical for the Martian. It just seems weird to me that a scientific thriller with amusing parts is a comedy. This is why I just don't give a shit about award shows
Here's a story from the late 80's that I still feel @#$%y about.
I was working in the technology...er, 'computer' division of a large paper company. One day, I was walking past an office where I saw one of the managers in a meeting with one of his employees. I was early/mid 20's at the time- and I acted pretty much exactly the same way I act today. So I stick my head in the office and look at the employee and say "I don't care what Jack says about you- you're a great programmer!" and turn my head and walk away without every directly looking at the boss (Jack) for maximum effect.
Well, turns out the meeting was because the dude was getting fired because he was crappy at his job (they were the system 38 team and I was VM/ESA, so we never had any technical interactions). And aside from me looking like an a$$, which was not an uncommon occurrence, the part that makes me remember this was that after the news came down, the employee who was fired (I wish I could remember his name) made it a point to seek me out and make sure I did NOT feel like a total idiot for what I did. He basically said I was never cut out for this role, blah blah blah, I have been trying to find something else, blah blah blah, Jack was right in firing me and probably should have a long time ago, etc.
