Here's a fun exercise. Some costs, in US dollars, for Chongqing China...
Meal, Average Restaurant: $2.10
Meal for 2, Fine Restaurant, Three-course: $15.56 (like a Michelin rated restaurant, the kind of place that makes you wear pants)
Domestic Beer (0.5 liter): $0.62
Coke/Pepsi (0.33 liter): $0.45
One-way Ticket (Local Transport): $0.38
Taxi 1 mile (Normal Tariff): $0.50
Basic Utilities (Electricity, Heating, Water, Garbage) for 915 sq ft Apartment: $57.56/mo
Rent per Month, 1 Bedroom Apartment: $134.82
As for groceries... diary (milk & cheese) is expensive in China, but everything else (beef, chicken, fruit, veggies) average around 1/8th the US price.
I chose Chongqing since it's an average city and is were my wife is from. When we go to visit her mother, we live like frikkin royalty... 3 course meals and a fine bottle of wine in a fine restaurant every day (I eat so much prime steak my colon gets impacted), roast duck for lunch, afternoon at a hot springs spa (with full body massage). One time we stayed at a luxury hotel that had a black marble bathroom with gold plated fixtures, like one of Saddam Hussein's palaces.
