Right, let's not pretend that "Muslim" doesn't translate to "Arab" for most people.

Interesting.

The death knell for affirmative action?
This Atlantic article argues that a new admission policy based on socio-economic status would be an improvement over race-based admission policies.

One could argue that college is damn late in life to make up for educational deficits. It's somewhere in the K-12 time period where all kids - regardless of race or wealth, should get equal footing. I don't know that brown folk get a lot of benefit being admitted to colleges where they cannot compete with those who qualified academically. And it's for sure wrong-headed to exclude Asians just because so many of them have worked so hard to excel.
Incredible: He did a totalitarian regime* for 40 years and took a picture every day! The results are incredible!
Based on its own investigation, The Soufan Group has calculated that between
27,000 and 31,000 people have traveled to Syria and Iraq to join the Islamic State
and other violent extremist groups from at least 86 countries.
• The increase is evidence that efforts to contain the flow of foreign recruits to
extremist groups in Syria and Iraq have had limited impact.
• The increase in foreign fighters is not uniform throughout the world; certain
regions and countries have seen more significant rises than others.
• The number of foreign fighters from Western Europe has more than doubled
since June 2014, while it has remained relatively flat in North America.
• Foreign fighters from Russia and Central Asia have shown a significant rise; some
estimates suggest a near 300% increase in known fighters since June 2014.
• Recruitment within the United States has been mostly reliant on social media,
particularly in the initial phases of the process.
• In the countries with the largest flows, recruitment to the Islamic State has
become more focused and localized, with fewer people just leaving on their own;
family and friends are playing a greater role.
• The average rate of returnees to Western countries is now at around 20-30%,
presenting a significant challenge to security and law enforcement agencies that
must assess the threat they pose.

This isn't quite the full story. The year Fisher was admitted, 92 percent of the University of Texas freshman class gained enrollment through the 10 percent plan. For the 8 percent admitted through the holistic process, university admissions officials reviewed their qualifications and gave them two scores: one based on essays, leadership activities, and background, including race, and one based on grades and test scores.
Fisher's academic qualifications were just average, and the university claimed that she wouldn't have been admitted even if she did get an extra boost for being a member of a minority group.
As ProPublica reported in 2013, although some students with lower grades and test scores than Fisher were admitted that year, the vast majority were white, and more than 150 black and Latino students with roughly the same or better grades and test scores were turned away.
