i don't understand the graph?

the middle is less middle-y, whilst the obscenely high is a lot, lot higher

and don't worry, you're not at all alone - us 'mericans, bless us, continue to imagine we're all in this together, rather than understanding the rapacious 0.01% has confiscated a much, much bigger chunk than has been their share conventionally in America.

and just to pre-empt the yelping from our liberareconomistics, such concentration doesn't necessarily augur ill for a cohesive society - but the correlations don't exactly support alternative forecasts.

but I REALLY wanted to comment on 538's chatty evaluation of the odds of a brokered convention, which seems to distill to, "while the odds are low, the conditions are about as tantalizingly ripe as a political intrigue nerd could ask for". What I think is most intriguing is the lack of experienced and capable brokers of such a thing: you're REALLY gonna lean on moneybegger Wretch Prepuce, human doorstop Yertle the McConnell, and Paulie Walnuts Ryan to steer the course of your party's future? Whooboy.

Oklahoma police officer found guilty of raping THIRTEEN black women
Thirteen women took the stand and told strikingly similar stories — Holtzclaw coerced them into having sex after threatening to arrest them on outstanding warrants or for possessing drug paraphernalia.

Most didn't dare report what allegedly happened to them to police. "I didn't think anyone would believe me," one woman testified. "I'm a black female."

It wasn't until a black woman in her 50s — identified in court papers as J.L. — came forward and told police what allegedly happened after Holtzclaw stopped her on June 18, 2014, that an investigation was launched.

Holtzclaw was fired before the trial began. The Oklahoma City Police Department said in a statement after the guilty verdicts were reached that it "is pleased with the jury's decision."

Why good for Ben Carson?

He's throwing a hissy fit over a reasonable discussion in which party officials were discussing how to deal with a real problem in this day and age. A brokered convention isn't stealing the nomination... it's the inevitable result of a primary season that does not result in a clear winner, especially when you have candidates who would be highly unlikely to compromise.

If the Republicans nominate any candidate other than the one who has won the most delegates, whether that be Trump or anyone else, the party is finished. Done. Would be 100x worse than any blowback from Trump or Cruz being the nominee.

Problem is you have a bunch of billionaires and millionaires who are scared they aren't going to be able to buy the nominee and scheming to get one of their personal property candidates in the spot. Only reason Jeb is hanging around.

That's... one way to look at it.

I'm honestly curious. What do you think happens at a real convention--one where the candidate hasn't already been decided well in advance?

He probably does but Cruz is also a sleazy say anything panderer.

He's saying it because it sounds tougher/cooler, not because he means that from a military tactic standpoint.

Cruz is crazy, but he's an incredibly smart guy and very good at rhetoric. He always knows exactly what he's saying.

it's weird though...he called a gun a machine gun when it wasn't and says stuff like this (inept military strategy we don't do) that if a Democrat said it the Republican base would be laughing and rolling down the aisles at how little they know about real man things. Cruz gets away with it for whatever reason.

Great points guys. I think he gets away with saying stupid things because he sounds not so stupid when compared to Trump. And his supporters don't like to think so much because it makes their heads hurt.

Vote for Trump!!!

I agree with this. Including the Jeb part. Of course, the fact that Trump isn't already bought and paid for shouldn't mean much to average folks when he'd act even more crazy than their hand-picked front men. The main difference between Prez Jeb and Prez Trump is the level of dangerous rhetoric. They would both screw over the poor and the brown with equal joy in their hearts.

Again, I think the key to Trump's popularity is that all the other candidates are fundamentally unattractive. I think that's the real problem the Republican party should worry about. I think they do recognize this to an extent, which is why there are whispers of perhaps Mitt Romney or Rick Perry swooping in to save the party. The only thing saving them is Hillary isn't exactly inspiring people either. But imagine what a Bill Clinton campaign led by James Carville would do to Cruz or Rubio.

I do think Trump has tapped into a well of discontent, and "drunk uncle" rhetoric appeals because there are a lot of drunk uncles out there. But I wonder how much of the polling is doing an effective job with likely voter/caucus goer screens as well. How many Trump supporters in closed primary states realize they need to be a registered Republican to vote in the Republican primary? Given Trump's appeal to the paranoid, how many will balk at the polling place when they're asked which party they are voting for? I would hypothesize that Trump will underperform his polling by at least 10 points.

this does a good job describing the 'drunk uncle' thing

https://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyl ... _headlines

Trump’s misinformation may be “strategic,” said Jeffery Hemsley, an assistant professor in the school of information studies at Syracuse University. “Each candidate isn’t talking to the public as a whole — they are talking to their base and to those they might be able to persuade into voting for them,” he said. “So for many centrists and those on the left, Trump seems crazy. But for a segment of those on the right, Trump speaks to them. If Trump is using poor sources for his information, that isn’t really a problem for his audience. That is where they are getting their information, too.”
