Yeh, I'm not sure I agree with his conclusion, but it's a really interesting study. What could be causing the increased substance abuse? I would suspect declining wages/quality of life and hopelessness, but I'm not sure the study shows that either

Uhm guys Marshall really doesn't reach a conclusion, and his hypothesis seems to amount to this:

But the most logical culprit [behind the uptick in self-inflicted mortality among middle aged white Americans] is ....The relative decline of American whites (or as social scientists refer to them, "non-Hispanic whites") versus other ethnic and racial groups - principally African-Americans and Hispanics.

About which he himself cautions against attributions of causality.

So what are you talking about? Presumably the mortality numbers are what they are. The reasons for them are not clear - as the TP reporter says, more than once.

Me personally, I'd like to see further breakdown by education level, and by geography

There's been a lot of discussion about this phenomenon. One person laid the blame on fox news and similar media for their incessant negativity. One thing not explored is the possibility that this group of men is first of all the group that has in some respects paid the price for affirmative action and secondly are the first group of men most likely to be out earned by similarly situated women.

What I do t like about it is the need to place something that dependent on a mental health state more on external things like tv and not on what's going on in the brain

Rudy Guliani agrees with Trump that all these Muslims were cheering, just look at this hate crime these young toughs did on one family to prove it:

“We had one situation in which a candy store owned by a Muslim family was celebrating that day, right near a housing development, and the kids in the housing development came in and beat them up. And I think both facts were corroborated to be true. They were celebrating that the towers had come down, some of the kids in the housing development got upset about it, and they came in and did a pretty good job of beating them up.”

Florida finally concludes there is no wrongdoing with Planned Parenthood. Rick Scott must be pissed.

Homosexual marriage is not mentioned in the Bible. Homosexual acts to honor pagan gods is, but that's different.

If you just follow the word of Jesus, you are doing well. It's not easy but it's a great goal to have in my view. Jesus said nothing about homosexuality. It must not be all that high on the list of sins -- if it's a sin at all.

There's a lot of old times rules and laws that Jesus essentially said we should forget about. He said there was a new way. Love God and love your neighbor. That kind of stuff. Look at the Sermon on the Mount. Good stuff there.

so, even if there was a substantial number of people sympathetic to al queda in newark or new york (and that's a far far reach), why would they be cheering the day of 9/11 anyway? Nobody really knew who the perpetrators were at that point.

this whole talk track makes no sense

i guess if you're wearing a throwback '93 WTC Bin Laden jersey you would know what was going down. I mean, we were pretty sure it was al quaeda by lunch. It didn't happen, but that part doesn't bother me. The part that thousands cheered on video and it didn't happen bothered me

There were those bits about helping the poor and not being greedy, too, but those seem to have been brushed over, as well.

Trump thinks he should demand 5MM from CNN to grace them with his presence for the debate.

He said he would donate it to wounded warriors, so I guess he could be shittier, but goddamn what a whiner.

They should promise 10 then donate it to Planned Parenthood.

my recollection was that it wasn't until fairly late in the evening that i heard that. i do remember sitting around the firehouse around 2PM and discussing who might have done this, as nobody there had any clues at that point.

According to 2015 data obtained by newsnet5.com, current federal grants go towards funding 155,000 STI tests, 14,000 cancer screenings, 13,000 HIV tests in health centers and nearly 5,000 HIV tests in the community annually.

Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio also uses the funds to provide sex education to more than 14,000 women, men and youth.

The non-profit provides health education and outreach in the community to more than 58,000 women, men and youth annually.

From July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015, Ohio’s 27 Planned Parenthood locations saw 78,909 patients for a total of 159,462 visits.

Stephanie Kight, CEO of Planned Parenthood of Greater Ohio told newsnet5.com that in a worst case scenario, programs like Violence Against Women Act education, the infant mortality reduction program and HIV testing program could be eliminated.

But Kight argues that quality and value of services could suffer.

“A year from now, I would look and see if the same number of people are being served for the same dollar because that’s why we get these grants,” Kight said. “We’re very good at writing efficient programs, high-quality programs.”

there is no legitimate way to replace this.

a rather timely piece from 538 showing Kasich's crusade against abortion in Ohio

despite his moderate rhetoric, he's done more to close down clinics that help women than anyone else. and he's done it through restrictions that are unnecessary on the clinic, on the woman, and scientifically unsound.

What a hero.

Pretty smart causing half of the surgical abortion clinics to close while making medical abortion nearly impossible by forcing them to use an outdated method. What a garbage state.

they're pro-life. except for poor women who can't travel to access legal medical services or afford to go to a doctor to get checkups, etc

and yes, i realize that those against abortion apparently see this as a positive development. that saddens me.

anti-abortion groups are now targeting IUDs, another legal contraceptive. they are using faulty science. but i thought Ted Cruz told me he knows of no one against contraception?
