USPS keeps sending me a special opportunity to get in on trying out Real Mail Notification®. Apparently they want to email me scans of the outside envelope of the stuff that will end up in my physical mailbox. They actually spent money on developing this crap. If they let me click on it so they could recycle it for me, then maybe, but WTF? Who on earth would care about this other then the people who got paid to do the development?

School board member compensation? What kind of BS is that?

Blount County in Tennessee

With a firm reliance upon the providence of Almighty God WE the BLOUNT COUNTY LEGISLATURE call upon all of the Officers of the State of Tennessee, the Governor, the Attorney General, and the members of the Tennessee Legislature, to join US, and utilize all authority within their power to protect Natural Marriage, from lawless court opinions. AND THE financial schemes of the enemies of righteousness wherever the source AND defend the Moral Standards of Tennessee.

WE adopt this Resolution before God that He pass us by in His Coming Wrath and not destroy our County as He did Sodom and Gomorrah and the neighboring cities. As the Passover Lamb was a means of salvation was a means of salvation to the ancient Children of Israel, so we stand upon the safety of the Lamb of God to save us.

WE adopt this Resolution begging His favor in light of the fact that we have been forced to comply and recognize that the State of Tennessee, like so many other God-fearing States, MAY have fallen prey to a lawless judiciary in legalizing what God and the Bible expressly forbids.

well you do have to recognize that she was doing her job under the Obama administration. (which includes supporting such deal and negotiating on behalf of what the President wants) I have no qualms with the "flip flop"

that's fair. part of the reason she's against it is sort of already dealt with, though (prescription drug copyrights).

Houshphandzadeh wrote:the charity exemption is so fucked

rich couple buys some Jeff Koons pos statue for 10 million. has their crooked appraiser value it at 15 million. lends it to the museum for 5 years, writes 15 million off their taxes. gets it back, waits five years, then promises it to the museum upon their death, 15 million more written off (or probably even more after having it re-appraised)

That sounds like the laws need to be re-written.

If the charity exemption was eliminated, it would be charities that would be complaining, not necessarily rich people. It's really an exemption for the people receiving the benefits, as they receive larger donations.

not really. museums hate these temporary loans but they can't sacrifice their relationships with rich donors

I guess you can choose not to believe that the wealthy abuse the hell out of the charity exception, but you're wrong. I'm sure there are plenty of articles out there if you search around

That's museums though, where the charital exemption is being used on something of value, but not necessarily a monetary donation. I would expect that most charities are dealing with monetary donations (cash and other financial assets that can be liquidated).

Edit: If the charity exemption is being used to make money, it should be rewritten. If it's just being used to reduce the tax burden of the donor (eg. donate $10k and reduce your tax bill by $2,500), then it's not being "abused." It's weird to argue that X law should be discarded since some people could abuse it. That's a very weak argument usually put forth by Republicans. "There could be abuse, so let's just toss out the law entirely." It's a bit of a non-sequitur, IMO.

I think what's being abused here is the part of the tax code that says you can donate an appreciated asset (commonly shared of stock) and deduct the value of the asset rather than the cost. The donor also avoids any capital gains taxes.

It's a pretty important form of charitable giving.

question so obvious even Chris Matthews asks it

laughing aloud right now, but damn this really isn't all that funny

Can we get the reaction of the current "leaders" among R POTUS candidates? Specifically, what is it they're leading right now?

Pelosi should be suggesting Speaker nominees, just listing off semi-anonymous R congresspeople at random
