ROSWELL, Ga. -(FOX 5)--A Hooters waitress is back home and recovering after donating one of her kidneys to a man she barely knows.
"It was just something inside me that was telling me, Mariana, he needs you," explained Marianna Villarreal, 22, who has worked at the Hooters on Holcomb Bridge Road in Roswell for about a year and a half.
Villarreal said she met Donald Thomas, 72, after his regular waitress left the restaurant. Thomas then started to sit at one of Villarreal's tables and that was when she learned he had to get dialysis three days a week because of kidney failure.
Villarreal said it took three months and lots of research before she asked Thomas the question that would save his life.
"I was like, well, I mean I have two kidneys," she recalled. "Do you want one of mine?"
Thomas said he did not understand why the waitress would offer to help him in such a dramatic way, but he gladly accepted. Both credit God with bringing them together.
"He was just a kind person with the biggest heart to want to keep living. He didn't want to die and that was just enough for me," said Villarreal.
The pair underwent surgery at the Piedmont Transplant Institute Friday. Since then, the story has gone viral.
