You don't need in-road sensors and all that garbage. What's really needed is a good way to deal with temporary traffic lights and detours which will probably just be a small device transmitting the temporary route adjustments once driverless cars are more prevalent. Google's already logged almost a million miles in California and Nevada, with 11 accidents so far. Each of those accidents were either caused by a human driver controlling the Google car or by the other vehicle. The cars will be here within 5 years, and once they get the hang of swinging a trailer around a loading dock, truck drivers will be SOL.
