But seriously, ford has developed some obstacle a avoidance tech that works to alert and even take over for a driver if they don't take action themselves.

Driverless cars are inevitable.

50 years hence, people will look back on the idiocy of humans piloting megaton death machines as we now look back on bloodletting as medicine.

Also, you won't own the car. ZipCar and Uber will converge. You will stream your rides as you do your music.

Who wants the hassle and cost of owning, maintaining, insuring, fueling, and parking a car when you get one on demand in 15 seconds?

And thus, government plans for rail projects will be money down a black hole.

The city of Rochester MN is planning a huge overhaul as a "medical tourism" destination. Nice thought, but it includes rail and parking gargages, all of which will be obsolete in 20 years.

I think the driverless car will largely supplant cars as we know them today, but I'm not sure about "streaming rides" becoming ubiquitous, at least outside of urban areas.

i'm with tp. parking lots and garages will go the way of the mall. cars are currently parked 98% of their lives. with any luck, that number will go down to around 10% within 10 years or so. depends how quickly people adapt. on demand cars will be amazing. get ready.

Don't you guys read the Atrios blog? He's always nay-saying the self-driving car and linked this yesterday:

Self driving car may never actually happen

The list of issues is pretty extensive, and even one of the top engineers who is 49 years old doesn't expect a fully self-driving car in his lifetime.

Even if Google is 80-90% of the way there, that last 10-20% may take a LONG time to perfect. And that's saying nothing about the massive financial interests and cultural momentum that would have to be overcome in order to realize such a thing as driverless on-demand cars. The entire American culture has been built up around families driving their own cars. Like it or not, America thrives economically on us all consuming shit.
you sure do seem to have a lot of time on your hands to be on this forum? Do you have a job? Are you a shut-in?

Where my Media pals at? Nice jaunt to Linvilla with the lady to go strawberry picking. Grabbed 9lbs. Then moseyed on into town to go to 320 market. Didn't know it moved. Had a small panic attack. Grabbed lunch there. Now headed to deacons oval for a happy hour and then light show installation by saint-gobain

If you take a car that currently sits 98% of the time and start using so that it only sits say 80% of the time, that means that a car that used to last 10 years won't last a year.

The idea of car sharing might make sense for someone who drives no more than once or twice a week I'd think. That's probably a substantial market, especially for people who live in urban areas--getting to a big grocery store is one time you'd like a car. For people who use their cars every day, I guess you could stagger commutes and such, but really this gets to be a pretty big hassle at some point.

There's already ways for people who only need a car once a week for shopping to do that, though. It's the driverless part that is the difficulty part and not really necessary

Yep. The only question is how fast it spreads from the cities. It will still make sense to own a vehicle in Montana, perhaps. But not KoP
