I don't know. FOX News is a combination of showbusiness and right-wing prophet. They'd had a parade of experts PROMISING their viewers a Republican win. When it didn't happen, they pretty much had to act surprised - what would their option have been? "Oh, well, we were expecting this." But they'd been promising everyone the opposite for months. They would have lost a lot of viewers. In fact, I think they did (aren't their numbers way off?).

Just watched the Times' documentary on Christine Quinn's failed mayoral campaign.

It's less a dissection of why she lost, though there's some of that in there, than a close look at how the final month of the campaign unfolded. Just in terms of the human toll, pretty fascinating stuff. About a half-hour long and IMO very well done.

Their predictions, and Romney's strategy were based on a set of ideological assumptions that did not match reality. Remember, you're talking about a party where belief that the universe is 6000 years old is common--not just among the rank and file, but among leaders as well. It's a world of faith--a set of beliefs immune to adjustment based on evidence--everything from tax cuts will reduce the deficit to the merits of abstinence only sex education. In such a world, it's hard to adjust strategy and tactics--consider not just Cruz, but the idea that somehow Rick Perry could be an effective standard bearer, despite his utter and total wipeout during the 2012 primaries. I think one thing

The one weird thing that does seem to counter my account is the way in which the base seems to rally around an unknown candidate for awhile and then when the flaws become evident they quickly abandon him. Sarah Palin, Jindal, Bachman, Herman Cain. Only the Pauls seem immune to this. Rand Paul could show up on the Senate Floor in full Klan regalia and his supporters would manage to rationalize it.

A lot of people on the far right still love Sarah Palin. It's she who stopped bothering to run for anything, thankfully.

But those two things are related. She's basically made herself a permanent backup quarterback. Delusional, destructive and despicable as she is, at some level I think she understands that actually governing is a hell of a lot of work. Her interests aren't public service: they're adulation and wealth. She's exactly where she wants to be.

I see Palin as the Kim Kardashian of politics.

Also, I think Palin really tapped into the resentment of many women in the 40-60 range--women who don't consider themselves feminists but still see the way they are not taken seriously by men of the same age--the women who really have grievances regarding equal pay and so forth. Hilary taps into some of that. If the Dems were smart, they'd be nominating more Elizabeth Warrens and fewer white dudes.

i guess we're gonna get the shutdown and republicans (ted cruz and co) are going to keep pointing at the ~39% approval for the ACA as proof that they are only carrying out the american peoples' will but then there's:

Some of them twist poll results to buttress their bitterness. They point to polls showing that most Americans opposed the law as fuel for their fight. What they neglect to reveal is that a sizable portion of those who opposed the law do so because they don’t think it goes far enough, not because it goes too far. A May CNN/ORC poll found that 43 percent of Americans favored the law while 54 percent opposed it. But it also found that of those polled, 16 percent opposed the law because they thought that it wasn’t liberal enough. Put another way, 59 percent of Americans support the law or want it to be more liberal.

no, see the Republicans threatening to shut down the government over implementing passed laws is Obama's fault:

“I think there is a way,” Rand Paul said. “And I have been saying all along that we should negotiate. See, historically Bob. the way it worked is if the House is Republican and passed something and the Senate was Democrat and passed something you had a conference committee, equal number of Republicans and Democrats, and you hashed out your differences. Why don’t we have a conference committee on this? You could appoint one today, they could meet tomorrow and hash out the differences. That is the way it is supposed to work. Republicans and Democrats are supposed to find a middle ground but right now, it is the president saying my way or the highway, if I don’t get everything I want, if I don’t get Obamacare — which Democrats passed without any Republican support — the Democrats are saying they are willing to shut down the government.”

agreeing to pay your debts is something that needs to be 'hashed out'.

in non-crazy, historic news, President Obama held a 15 minute conversation with Iranian President Rouhani:
"The two of us discussed our ongoing efforts to reach an agreement over Iran's nuclear program," Obama said. "I reiterated to President Rouhani what I said in New York: While there will surely be important obstacles to moving forward, and success is by no means guaranteed, I believe we can reach a comprehensive agreement."

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The president noted that his conversation with Rouhani, which took place as the Iranian president headed to the airport, "underscores the deep mistrust between our countries, but also indicates the prospect of moving on that difficult history."

Moments before Obama took the podium, Rouhani tweeted the news.

In phone convo, President #Rouhani and President @BarackObama expressed their mutual political #will to rapidly solve the #nuclear issue.

— Hassan Rouhani (@HassanRouhani) September 27, 2013
A senior administration official said that Obama began the conversation by congratulating Rouhani on his election victory, and noted the constructive statements that Rouhani has made since taking office. The "bulk of the call focused on the nuclear issue," the official said.

The call ended with Rouhani telling Obama in English to "have a nice day" and Obama replying thank you in Farsi.

On Tuesday, Rouhani told the U.N. General Assembly that Iran poses "absolutely no threat to the world" and that the sanctions imposed by the U.S. are "violent — pure and simple" and "intrinsically inhumane."

As his stay at the U.N. wrapped up on Friday, Rouhani had nothing but kind words to say about the United States in a news conference: "The atmosphere is quite different from the past," he said. "Our goal is the shared interest between the two nations. Our goal is resolving problems, our goal is step-by-step creating trust between the governments and peoples."

This Rouhani guy tweets more than keith law

"Negotiate."

Unbelievable. House Republicans have refused to accept a conference committee for months, but it's the Democrats who refuse to negotiate.

What an asshole.

So when 700,000 non-essential personnel are sent to the streets bringing along maybe about 1.4M+ contractors and all the closed stuff in DC runs at about a $200M/day loss of revenue, then what? That $200M quickly becomes a tipping point crushing all the services workers when they are furloughed from everything. The only upside is that my rather horrible commute will be a little easier, until I am put on the bench.

That and tax revenues for both Maryland and Virginia are going to take a massive hit in October. But why should some schlub congressman from Montana or Iowa give a crap?

The average American is pretty dumb, and 50% of Americans are dumber than the average American. The more complicated the poll question, the more confusing and less instructive the response data will be.
