I want to read Neil Barofsky's book about TARP, an anecdote from which seems aligned to this: Barofsky inquires why the HAMP program, designed to assist homeowners underwater with their mortgages, has been so under-utilized. He's told, I want to say by that toad Geithner but more likely by an underling, that bailing out homeowners would enable moral hazard. Left unanswered is why this is a problem when the sums in question are five or six figures, but not when talking tens or hundreds of billions with the bankers.

I mean, we know the answer.

I think I have some news that may get JH back on the bottle again--Huckabee the #2 choice (after Rubio) for 2016 among Louisiana Republicans.

It's really all just name recognition at this point, though--think about how well Lieberman polled among Dems in 2001-2002, and maybe later than that.

But while we're speculating idly about 2016--a totally deplorable thing to do IMO, btw--it seems to me like Hillary Clinton would be unbeatable unless the economy's in much worse shape than anyone seems to think it'll be. If that's so, the Republicans probably should either nominate one of their many psychos, to get it out of their system, or shift too far in the other direction and go with someone even people like me might find vaguely palatable, e.g. Susannah Martinez.

The idea being when they next have a real chance--let's say in 2020--they could go with someone a bit further right who'd both have more appeal to the hardcore crowd but be close enough to give the disaffected moderates sick of the Ds after 12 years some comfort. Christie, who'll have started running for president full time after finishing his second term, seems plausible here.

Hope this doesn't mean you're sick or something

Though I also have to say he's exactly the sort of guy you'd love if he was a Crip instead of a Blood (or vice-versa; you get my meaning): incredibly rich, basically effective, partisan in a vicious but not especially stupid way.

Personally I find him a decent public servant who's a bit comical/sad because he believes himself to be so much more.

Just not drinking for February. Halfway there.

Lautenberg is not a nice person and has been a largely minor player on Capitol Hill given his long service, though I'm sure I'd like him if he was a Republican because his prickly vindictiveness would mostly be directed at people I dislike rather than people I like. The part about him I find weirdest/most distasteful/pitiable is that by any measure he has led a remarkably successful life - first in business and later in politics - and he still seems primarily driven by anger/lack of respect. He wasn't able to settle down in retirement in his late seventies and he's giving up the fight unwillingly even now knocking on the door of 90 years old. But he is not a happy warrior.

I will say given the crap we've been through with Torricelli and now Menendez, at least Lautenberg isn't corrupt. Plus he fucking HATED Torricelli so he can't be all that bad.

I'm not a big fan of capital punishment.

And you make leaches like Dimon very easy to defend by posting like a flaming idiot. :dh:

Kudos on the temporary not drinking. I find that occasional abstention from indulging in vices renders them more enjoyable upon resumption, and reassures me that they aren't really "problems" in any sense. And I'm glad this isn't a permanent thing, as you just love it so damn much.

Hard to disagree with anything in your assessment of Lautenberg. I guess one could make a comp to any athlete who self-motivates by endless perceived disrespect--that was Jordan's thing, and I was more impressed by his ability to find examples and convince himself than anything else--but Frank ain't him.

luv u liz

At her first Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee hearing, Warren questioned top regulators from the alphabet soup that is the nation's financial regulatory structure: the FDIC, SEC, OCC, CFPB, CFTC, Fed and Treasury.

The Democratic senator from Massachusetts had a straightforward question for them: When was the last time you took a Wall Street bank to trial? It was a harder question than it seemed.

"We do not have to bring people to trial," Thomas Curry, head of the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency, assured Warren, declaring that his agency had secured a large number of "consent orders," or settlements.

"I appreciate that you say you don't have to bring them to trial. My question is, when did you bring them to trial?" she responded.

"We have not had to do it as a practical matter to achieve our supervisory goals," Curry offered.

Warren turned to Elisse Walter, chair of the Securities and Exchange Commission, who said that the agency weighs how much it can extract from a bank without taking it to court against the cost of going to trial.

"I appreciate that. That's what everybody does," said Warren, a former Harvard law professor. "Can you identify the last time when you took the Wall Street banks to trial?"

"I will have to get back to you with specific information," Walter said as the audience tittered.

"There are district attorneys and United States attorneys out there every day squeezing ordinary citizens on sometimes very thin grounds and taking them to trial in order to make an example, as they put it. I'm really concerned that 'too big to fail' has become 'too big for trial,'" Warren said.

Jesse Jackson Jr. to plead guilty to federal charges, and he's looking at about a 4 year sentence. Also part of his plea deal is implicating his wife.

Will anyone admit that the sequester was a crappy attempt to work out a deal that serves the nation or will arrogance get in the way as people let it happen?!? How the F did it become a political tool? Government workers will get off their "lazy asses" and riot, meanwhile the nation will weaken its hand by its own lack of effort by its elected leaders. Is it well reported outside of DC that your congress people age going on a week long paid vacation starting already? D*cks.

Have a nice day.
