Well, they were after Russian money launderers, which is only a subset of Russian investors. But rather than address that, they punish anyone with money saved. It's impressive, really, how they can make a $10B bailout have the maximum negative effect on the EU region.

I'd bet they were after any russian money, but that's just a guess.

It's like they want the world to be pushed back into a deep recession -- take it to the conspiracy thread.

Too bad Europe doesn't go to war over this stuff anymore. The best stimulus to American economy: European War.

it's all on tape, but the FBI illegally tape it so it couldnt be used

whoa:
"We have found that our friend, the Republican nominee, our California friend, has been playing on the outskirts with our enemies and our friends both, he has been doing it through rather subterranean sources,” Johnson told Sen. Richard Russell, D-Ga., in one taped phone call. “Mrs. Chennault is warning the South Vietnamese not to get pulled into this Johnson move."

Anna Chan Chennault, the Chinese-born widow of World War II aviation legend Claire Chennault, was a Republican activist and Nixon's emissary to the South Vietnamese. She is still alive at age 87.

Why did Johnson refuse to break the news? In part, it would mean admitting that he had bugged several ambassadors’ phones, which also might not sit well with the American public. Johnson informed Humphrey of Nixon’s actions, though he ultimately decided not to make the announcement in the vain hope that he was on track to win anyway.

In the end, Nixon used Johnson’s “failure” to end the Vietnam War as a major selling point, even citing the South’s withdrawn from peace talks as a black mark against Johnson. Nixon won by an extremely small margin and once in office, escalated the war for years before negotiating for peace in 1973.

While the confirmation of Nixon’s behavior is shocking enough, the LBJ tapes also reveal that the Democratic president at one point had a secret plan to re-enter the 1968 presidential election at the last second. In the spring, after strong showings by the antiwar candidates Eugene McCarthy and Robert F. Kennedy, Johnson abruptly announced that he would not run for a second term, and Humphrey entered the race in his place.

This has been known for years. Kissinger was his emissary.

Edit: there's probably not quite enough here for a full book, but the Johnson/Nixon relationship and dynamic is incredibly interesting to me. They served in the Senate together and never quite went head to head for the presidency, though they could have. Weird mutual respect--they recognized each other, I think.

They both were outsiders, paranoiacs, with lame war records and VP to war heroes, ambivalent but at least occasionally noble on civil rights, political mutant geniuses who wound up destroying themselves and doing huge harm to the country.

Chemical weapons alleged to have been used in Syria. Unclear if by the government or rebels. Either way if true, shit is going to hit the fan.

Looks like a decent shot that the South Carolina House race could feature Stephen Colbert's sister against Mark "Appalachian Trail" Sanford.

I wouldn't have thought the universe loves Colbert that much, but here we are.

I think Sanford is going to have a very tough time in the runoff. Long way to go from 37% to 50%+1.

Romney beat Obama in the district by 18%, and the GOP primary tonight had 3x more voters (though it was more competitive). If he does survive the runoff, Sanford will win unless he disappears again.

note to republican strategery types: Mike Rogers is not the guy you want making a case that we have a moral obligation to take action in Syria.

Your difficulty is that none of your elected officials is in any better position to do so either.

So best to try making the case on some other basis
