Well, you described it as if it was charity on the part of the telephone companies, which it is not. In fact, they make money on it and some telecomm companies have been accused of grossly abusing it to provide phones to people who are ineligible for the program.
We now know that Amaro really is running the Phillies. He and Monty seem to have ignored the committee.

I thought we all agreed it is ridiculous when Republicans twist the Bible to justify their their political positions? While the side of the argument of the senator is the the progressive side, the diary is putting forth a variant of the liberal critique, that one cannot cherry pick your favorite parts of the bible to justify one's conservatism.

That's not because the bible is startlingly consistent; it's because the thing is all over the conceptual lot. You can't cherry pick because it's too easy, on many, many topics, to find some biblical bullshit that supports essentially the opposite position.

The worst thing about fundies is that they always seem to cherry pick--the citations are one or two verses at most--why not read the context? Context is essential to even begin to understand what's going on.

I really believe that in their use of one or two lines from scripture, fundamentalists are making a mockery of Christianity.

Secondly, the overwhelming emphasis is on the sins of others--you never hear them talk about bearing false witness, because church gossip is a full contact sport in most of these congregations.

More from CPAC, the conference that keeps on giving.... at a Tea Party talk on racial tolerance and how to reach out to minority voters.

Scott Terry of North Carolina, accompanied by a Confederate-flag-clad attendee, Matthew Heimbach, rose to say he took offense to the event’s take on slavery. (Heimbach founded the White Students Union at Towson University and is described as a “white nationalist” by the Southern Poverty Law Center.)

“It seems to be that you’re reaching out to voters at the expense of young white Southern males,” Terry said, adding he “came to love my people and culture” who were “being systematically disenfranchised.”

Smith responded that Douglass forgave his slavemaster.

“For giving him shelter? And food?” Terry said.

So you're saying the only two options are cherry-picking or self-contradictory incoherence.

Sounds about right.

Shock in Cyprus as savers face bailout levy - People in Cyprus have reacted with shock to news of a one-off levy of up to 10% on savings as part of a 10bn-euro (£8.7bn; $13bn) bailout agreed in Brussels.

Pretty wild

Kind of think Rand Paul is going to be either the R nominee for Pres in 2016, or will mount a significant 3rd party effort. Unless he's willing to accept the Veep nomination. And I don't think he will.

With continued successes against the institution of marriage, it will probably be a Siamese ladyboy cat and a poodle named Philip.

Paul just put up a 'right to life' bill, citing the 14th amendment. he's very, very serious about legislating.

oh, and he just won the CPAC straw poll, a great indicator of absolutely nothing where people can vote as many times as they want if they just put numbers in

Donald Trump toeing the Stormfront party line:

You can be out front. You can be the spearhead. You can do whatever you want to do but every one of those 11 million people will be voting Democratic. And you have to be very, very careful, because you could say that, to a certain extent, the odds aren’t looking so great right now for Republicans that you’re on a suicide mission. You’re just not gonna get those votes.

Now, I say to myself — why aren’t we letting people in from Europe? I have many friends. Many, many friends. And Nobody wants to say it, but I have many friends from Europe. They want to come in. People I know. Tremendous people. Hard working people. They can’t come in. I know people whose sons went to Harvard…

I still can't get over this Cyprus thing. Your banking sector is in turmoil so to pay for the necessary bailout you're going to tax bank deposits, undermining trust in the banking system even further.

Who are the ad wizards who came up with this one?
