I thought we all agreed it is ridiculous when Republicans twist the Bible to justify their their political positions? While the side of the argument of the senator is the the progressive side, the diary is putting forth a variant of the liberal critique, that one cannot cherry pick your favorite parts of the bible to justify one's conservatism.

That's not because the bible is startlingly consistent; it's because the thing is all over the conceptual lot. You can't cherry pick because it's too easy, on many, many topics, to find some biblical #$!&@ that supports essentially the opposite position.

You can be out front. You can be the spearhead. You can do whatever you want to do but every one of those 11 million people will be voting Democratic. And you have to be very, very careful, because you could say that, to a certain extent, the odds aren’t looking so great right now for Republicans that you’re on a suicide mission. You’re just not gonna get those votes.
