About the time when you start considering them as friends instead of parents' friends.

Also works with friends' parents.

I'm brutal with friends' parents. Just last night I ate at a friend's house with his parents and I pretty much reverted to a timid kid with a vocabulary of "Please" and "Thank you." The name thing was especially weird because he's my friend's stepdad, and he just calls him Joe, which I couldn't do, so I didn't call him anything.

TV and anyone else who teaches, how do you handle requests for recommendations from crappy students who you barely know?

Why would a student that barely knows you ask for a recommendation? Usually they'd ask people that know them well...

a lot of kids go through college without fostering a good relationship with any of their professors/TAs.

I got recommendations when going from high school to college because those teachers knew me well, but I never asked for any when going from college to career.

I caught a kid cheating, who later asked for a recommendation. Kids are dumb (I said no).

If you have a crappy student ask for a rec, tell him that you are not able to write an effective recommendation, given their struggles in your class.

BTW, does this person want to pursue grad school? Why would he/she need a recommendation, for a job?

She's applying to a (competitive?) study abroad program and needs a letter. Her options are fairly limited I guess. She wasn't a terrible student grade wise, but she didn't come to class regularly, didn't participate, and never said a word to me.

I'd say no if she was applying to a fancy grad program or something, but I guess this is harmless enough. It won't be the best thing I've ever produced.

You have three options--go ahead and write a lukewarm letter. If the place takes letters seriously, this might sink her. If they mostly care about grades, or whatever, it really won't make a difference. You can tell her straight out--I can't write you a letter because you were a slacker. You can agree to write a letter, and specifically use the letter to point out all her flaws, and really sink her chances.

Kids are dumb. In the main, letters aren't that important--but a negative one can sink you. They one exception might be a high powered academic grad program, but in that case, a letter from a TA isn't going to matter.

I generally tell crappy students no. Like I think Werth said, I tell them I can't write an effective letter. If they persist, I tell them I'll do it, but it will be negative because they were crummy students.

Also, I generally ask for a resume, or personal statement or something so I can back up the student's claims about themselves. I also like to have a copy of some assignment the student did, again, so I can refer to something specific.
