my parents just paid it off about a year ago. they have no idea what to do with their money. i told them to just start investing it, but they want to make repairs to the house first.

In all honesty, depending on the specifics, it might be advantageous to them (and you) to get them to help you out with a down payment. You can set it up so that they own whatever percent of the purchase price they contribute, plus a few points extra. You pay the mortgage/fees. Or whatever works for you I really wish I had been able to convince my father to do that when I started grad school. At the time, nice condos in the New Brunswick area could be had for under 80k. By the time I finished, the real estate market was starting to take off. He would've profited, and I would have walked away with a nice little nest egg.

the last couple years my parents keep saying they're going to give me stuff and then never mentioning it again. over dinner once, they said they were gonna start paying half my student loans since my brothers are still living at the house while I promptly left and they felt like they should help me out, too. seemed like they really thought it over. never brought it up again. then my mom said she was gonna get me a nice watch for graduating grad school. been three years and no watch! but I don't have the nerve to ask for either

Speaking of poop, some dude clogged up the bathroom so now it is flooded and sh!t-smell is starting to permeate the floor. I'm starting to doubt that maintenance understands the urgency of this situation.
