One of those obligations you pick up as part of a service organization where you get trapped at a table of people you don't know. I was a fill in for a last minute cancellation (someone who might have known what was happening - or at least the guest list). As it was sort of a professional item as I was a representative at the banquet. I did not know anyone so it was a long 4 hours. I also learned that it is not only OK to say no, but it is a good idea.
The point I tried to gently make was to people who have to be retired, thus had time to go to this thing, and were likely to be collecting from the system. I did get an appreciation for teachers pension however, because there was talk of collecting something close to full salary via pension plus social security making retirement awesome. I do not have a clue about the numbers, but that system has to be on a collision course with financial failure. Again, I just STFU and listened.
