One of those obligations you pick up as part of a service organization where you get trapped at a table of people you don't know. I was a fill in for a last minute cancellation (someone who might have known what was happening - or at least the guest list). As it was sort of a professional item as I was a representative at the banquet. I did not know anyone so it was a long 4 hours. I also learned that it is not only OK to say no, but it is a good idea.

The point I tried to gently make was to people who have to be retired, thus had time to go to this thing, and were likely to be collecting from the system. I did get an appreciation for teachers pension however, because there was talk of collecting something close to full salary via pension plus social security making retirement awesome. I do not have a clue about the numbers, but that system has to be on a collision course with financial failure. Again, I just STFU and listened.

I said her analogy was awful. In general whenever a politician invokes the Holocaust, it's not only offensive (with rare exceptions), but it's stupid because it immediately overshadows any argument they're trying to make.

Calvin said "Idaho Republican says Obamcare is like shipping Jews to death camps." You said "just my opinion, but being upset someone compared healthcare reform to the holocaust isn't a trivial thing." The dumb woman from Idaho said “The insurance companies are creating their own tombs. Much like the Jews boarding the trains to concentration camps, private insurers are used by the feds to put the system in place because the federal government has no way to set up the exchange. Several years from now, the federal government will want nothing to do with private insurance companies. The feds will have a national system of health insurance and they will pull the trigger on the insurance companies.”

She's not saying that Obamacare is like shipping Jews to death camps or making a broad comparison between healthcare reform and the Holocaust. She's making an unhelpful, inappropriate and inaccurate comparison between the actions of insurance companies trying to lobby for state exchanges to be set up to the Holocaust. If you think it's weird that I feel compelled to point out that what you're saying is inaccurate, welcome to the Internet.

Your dismissal didn't offer any sort of disagreement with Calvin's synopsis or your perceived inaccuracy in what he was saying. All you did was make a snarky dismissal using language designed to trivialize what Calvin was saying.

He was a) repeating something that someone had just posted and b) badly misrepresenting what was said. His post was crap coming and going, so I dismissed it snarkily.

In the future I will make sure to have long, well footnoted posts on this baseball message board - the zenith of human discourse - in response to every poor post any of you make, since this has troubled you all so much.

Gotta admit I had almost that exact thought--might have substitued "an America" for world and "bug shit crazy dictator of Iran" for jh's descriptors.

Context matters too. McCain might be a lot of things, but I'm confident he's no racist.

i don't think mccain is racist either. i posted it because i found it funny that amash, a republican, was calling him out.

also "monkey" is a known derogatory term for darkies. why even go there?
