Sequestering The Night Away - Politics

See,now I'm all nostalgic for when we just called other world leaders "madmen". It was probably actually more helpful than monkey. I don't think it's racist at all, but he ought to be ashamed of himself.

Also have to disagree with JFLNYC. I believe Lautenberg actually played tennis with Lincoln's mom.

also "monkey" is a known derogatory term for darkies. why even go there?

do i think mccain is racist? i dont know, i have my doubts. i doubt he's racist against his own child. however, a non-racist can still say a racist thing and be wrong for doing so.

A comedian makes that joke, not a guy who ran for president 4 years ago and it is racially motivated, don't be dense.

better move to mars

countering a crazy person by being racist is pretty weak/lazy

But he wasn't being racist. Monkey comparisons are not new when insulting a politician with whom you disagree/think is mentally deficient. Iran just sent a monkey into space. Ahmadinejad said he wants to be the first Iranian in space. Ahmadinejad holds a variety of subhuman beliefs and is bananas. McCain made a funny.

Amash of all people should be embarrassed for throwing around the term racist loosely. Libertarian fiscal policy is often panned as being racist because minorities would be disproportionately negatively effected (at least in the short term) by their fiscal policies, and I'm sure Amash would be pissed off if he was called a racist for thinking the welfare state should be scaled back.

If a stranger walked up on the street and called you a monkey it would have a completely different meaning and intent then if someone walked up to the street and called td a monkey. Topical or not topical it was in poor taste at best.

I think it's insane to think McCain's comment was racist. It requires you to completely ignore the context.

so corbett is going to try to cut pensions. this was money promised, people paid taxes, workers worked for it, and the PA legislature willingly underfunded the pension system for about the last 15 years. now, they have just decided to say 'meh, we aint paying'. now they want to go to a 401k system, which we all know works out just great.

i love it. politicians screw up and the workers get screwed. pa workers have been contributing, and actually had their contribution rate raised in 2010 for all incoming employees. why did the PA legislature decide to just ignore funding it?

the fairest thing is to fix how the amount is calculated. now, they average the top 3 salaries received. that makes no sense. you should average the entirety of one's career. it's only fair. disregarding a certain amount of OT would be appropriate, as well.
the multiplier should be slightly lowered. we also need to raise taxes. this is money owed.

the comment itself is at best really really dumb and at worst racist. a long time politician like mccain should know better than to call a brown person a monkey on twitter.

This isn't what happened. In all of these stupid arguments over the last week, all of the liberal arguments amount to "Let's pretend the situation was completely different, then it's racist." McCain didnt call a random person on the street a monkey. Yeesh. I'm glad Trent Steel and dajafi have reminded me that I'm not taking crazy pills.

there's a difference between whether John McCain meant it as a racist term and whether it is a racist term. regardless of context, DON'T CALL BROWN PEOPLE MONKEYS is a pretty hard and fast rule

I did take it a bit out of context, but that was only for illustrative purposes. td said it best here:

To be completely honest, I have never associated "monkey" as being a racist term re "brown people." I've associated it as a racist term in relation to African-Americans and Africans. I don't even know who qualifies as a "brown person". That's a weird term that doesn't even make sense to me. An Iranian is a "brown person"? Is there anything similar about the cultural experience of Iranians and Africans? That's news to me. Pakistani? Colombian?

I would bet everything I own that it would never even occur to McCain that he is a "brown person" in the same way an African-American is a "brown person" and that it would be any more racist to call him a monkey than it would be to call Hugo Chavez a monkey
