The Fiscal Cliff: Politics, Not Lee

Did we read the same article??

I pretty much agree with the last two paragraphs:

That’s not what happened: Obama ran on his unsatisfactory but not disastrous record as President; Romney ran on nothing more than vague promises that things would go better with him in office.

There were plenty of reasons to vote against the extension of Obama’s presidency, as I myself did. But it’s neither stupid nor crazy nor corrupt to prefer that to the assurances of an otherwise decent man who is apparently willing to say anything to be elected. Conservatives and Republicans who hope to return to power need to understand that.

he's saying it's understandable why people voted for O.

I think Calvin is referring to the OTHER article, by Erikson. The linked article at the bottom of the original post is not the same as the article quoted in most of that post.

In this case, finding a financial solution is taxation for the government.

(a) that wasn't my quote
(b) Barbara, not Laura. (Or are you referring to the "working quite well for them" quote?)

But in the end it'll be 2-3 dollars of spending cuts (entitlements and I hope defense) for every new dollar of revenue, most of which will come from return of the top rate to Clinton levels and closing loopholes.

Speaking of Grover Norquist and Barbara Bush, this reminds me of what was easily my favorite moment of the 2012 political campaign:

“The rigidity of those pledges is something I don’t like. The circumstances change and you can’t be wedded to some formula by Grover Norquist. It’s – who the hell is Grover Norquist, anyway?” [George H.W.] Bush remarked.

“I think he ought to go back to Alaska,” Barbara Bush joked, a reference to a 2010 interview in which she said she hoped Sarah Palin would remain in her home state.

Let alone someone in or around Danville, Martinsville, Lynchburg, Roanoke, or... dear god, the parts further west than Roanoke. I mean, we have three of the most prominent conservative Christian law schools in the country dispersed around VA.

I suspect that RPH knows more then a few places that fly the stars and bars of a bygone war every day. Richmond was the epicenter of southern succession as it was the capital. Stupid as that sounds, it is a sad truth. As a carpet bagging Yankee, I cannot even begin to understand this, but it is fact.

we have a plant site that flys a confederate flag outside of its property area. and like every thursday or friday or something crazy people all go out there and salute it. mind blowing

Where on earth are you locate?

As a northern note, if it is stars and bars, that is the battle flag. A quiz you don't want to give to thee Nutzies is to provide 3 flags including the real flag of the confederate states government and the battle flag plus something else plausible and see if they actually know what is the proper confederate flag.

Stars & Bars = first national flag of the Confederacy, which does not resemble the confederate flag we all know & hate in any way
The thing that you see ignorant people using = Naval jack
The "battle flag" is a squared version of the Naval jack, which is rectangular in shape.

I used to quite obsessed with Civil War flags for some reason as a kid. My Dad was a Civil War military buff, and it was the only thing about all of it that really interested me.

Also, Mississippi should be ashamed of itself for flying that state flag of theirs. I live in South Philly, and down on Broad Street they have the state flags of all 50 states hung up. If I were mayor that Mississippi state flag would be taken down and would not be flown until they changed it.

They may not HAVE to remove the Confederate jack from their flag, but we sure as hell don't have to fly it here.
