Pragmatic, certainly. But to pretend that it's about the issue itself and not about making your party more palatable to the rest of the country... that's just awesome.

Left has its conspiracy theorists too... Hearing how the Koch brothers held a massive stock sell off to shake the market Election Day +1. The only evidence existing are email chains. Come on people, that situation is being accurately reported. Cliff of the fiscal type + significant European financial uncertainty = global market concern.

Pretty much every divide in the electorate can be explained by one simple factor: the South, other than VA and FL, really loathes Obama. Outside the South, he ran almost even among white people. Probably also true (I haven't seen) among old people. That those red states have lower percentages of people wIth college degrees is kind of incidental to the fact that most of them are of the old Confederacy.

That said, I would guess that more-educated Southerners were more opposed to the president than less educated Southerners.

What kind of compromise can be reached? If dems offer to lower corporate tax can the income for the rich be raised?

No, it was pretty consistent here in VA, regardless of education level. The real distinguishing factor was your proximity to an urban center, not your level of education.

I've been on the inside of big events where we pay for a well-known keynote speaker. You pick 'em up at the airport, direct them to the podium, etc. Sometimes you get to hobnob in the green room or c0cktail reception. Most folks are really gracious, but the two biggest horses' patoots were Bob Woodward and Chris Matthews. The kindest, sweetest, most patient? Barbara Bush. Locally, Larry Kane also a good guy.

Yeah, but he won that state. Culturally, VA is increasingly not-South... though in general, yeah, the "crowded spaces vs empty spaces" divide is a big factor.

Northern and Eastern Virginia is not traditionally southern aligned, but outside of that population band it sure is.

Whenever I see a 'romney won more counties' or some other ridiculous argument it reminds me of that great post (from 2009 or so) about the mets leading the division for more days than anyone in the past 3 years.

How many white voters in 2008 died before 2012? I looked but I didn't see that question in any exit polls.
