weren't we just talking about how romney's aggresiveness made him look good in the debate? biden doesn't give a shit how he comes off to the GOP base, they hate him already. they were building it up as the brains of the GOP machine going up against a bumbling, tottering old grandpa. they forgot about joe.

I haven't seen any of it yet. I had some weird thing where I feel like the people I like will do worse if I watch. Last Wednesday is obviously evidence of that.

That these are the perceptions of the two people says more about the debasement of the DC press corps than anything else. Ryan, presented as numerate and reasonable by mainstream reporters and columnists desperate for a little bipartisan cred, has never been anything but a hardcore partisan and ideologue. He lies constantly but, unlike his running mate, not well.

Biden has said quite a bit of dumb stuff, but no more than Romney, and nobody thinks Romney's stupid. Biden spent almost 40 years as a senator, chaired committees, wrote major laws, made and broke Supreme Court nominees. Love him or hate him, he's a serious guy who has made a major impact.

This should be Obama's "closing statement" for the next two debates, and for his campaign:

"Since the beginning of October, the articulated Romney/Ryan plan has become this:

1. Cut taxes, but in a revenue neutral way, by eliminating loopholes, although they won't say which ones, and they won't eliminate loopholes for those who need them, only they won't say who they think need them.

2. Increase military spending, but get out of Afghanistan exactly on the schedule already set.

3. Keep Medicare exactly the way it is, except for people under 55 who want to use a voucher system.

4. While doing all this, reduce the deficit.

So let's review:

1. They're pledging to collect no more revenue, so there won't be any more money to pay down the debt.
2. They're pledging to increase military spending, so that will be more money spent.
3. They're pledging to keep Medicare the same for anyone who wants it to be the same, which means there will be no savings.
4. And somehow collecting the same amount of money, spending the same on Medicare, and spending MORE on the military is going to lead to deficit reduction.

That's not voodoo economics. That's voodoo math.

I don't think Governor Romney has arrived at this message because he is a bad guy or because he doesn't know what he really wants to do, but because he found himself losing at the beginning of October and decided that the only way to catch up was to tell everybody everything they want to hear. And that's exactly what his message has become:

I'll cut taxes! (Don't worry, it won't cut revenues!)
I'll reduce Medicare spending! (Don't worry, the program you like will stay exactly the same!)
I'll increase military spending! (Don't worry, I'll end the Afghan war and won't start any others!)
I'll get rid of growth-choking regulations! (Don't worry, I'll still make sure Wall Street follows the rules!)
I'll repeal Obamacare! (Don't worry, only the bad parts!)

This is what you have to do when you find yourself losing in October. Tell every group of voters what they want to hear. And it works - for a little while. Governor Romney hopes it works long enough for him to get elected.

It's up to the American people to see through this, and make him answer: what are you really going to do? If he won't answer, do you really want to vote for him?

My record is clear: After inheriting an economy in free fall, first we stopped the bleeding, then passed programs designed to get us growing again. We've had 31 consecutive months of job growth. We successfully saved the American auto industry. We passed health insurance reform, so that more Americans will be covered than ever before, and those with pre-existing conditions will no longer be excluded from getting good health insurance. We've preserved the middle-class Bush tax cut, and we are committed to making it permanent if we're re-elected. If we're re-elected, we'll continue to pursue policies designed to promote a healthy middle class, add jobs, push us toward energy independence, and keep us safe at home and abroad. And we're more than prepared to discuss, in detail, how we're going to do it. We can't be everything to everybody, but we can do what we think is in the best interests of the greatest number.

If that's a path you'd like to pursue, please give us your vote on November 6th."

^Obama is welcome to use this.

Poll: Romney leads Obama in Maine congressional district

A couple of weeks ago when things were shitty and paths to 270 looked nearly impossible, a buddy of mine and I decided Maine 02 was the key to the election, and we've been shouting MAINE 02 to each other on gchat whenever bad polls come out. Lo and behold MAINE 02! is coming good. Dems will probably release an internal poll to counter this, but I'm enjoying the moment.

Could save us the headache of the House if Romney picks up IN, NC, FL, CO, VA, IA and NV of the Obama 2008 states. Could also get Romney to 269 if he picks up IN, NC, FL, CO, OH and one of IA or NV. I have a hard time seeing him win Ohio but not VA at this point though.
