Really. Kerry handed Bush his ass in the first debate that year, then Edwards looked way out of his depth against Cheney. It stopped Kerry's momentum and probably reassured Bush supporters.

This is a big theme in the difference between Repubs and Dems. I think Dems are more independent minded and as a result more quick to disagreements and criticisms of each other. Repubs are more concerned with winning so they won't admit to reality in public.
