and since the republican's stated most important objective of the past four years was to "make sure obama is a one-term president", I'd say he's done OK. And it sure looks like they're going to fail at that goal anyway and leave an even bigger mess to clean up. I just hope after November we can move on to the good of the country instead of the good of the party. I dunno, is that wishful thinking??

The former I never got swept up in but I've been firmly in the latter camp and continue to be. The Republican party is filled with rotten people with rotten ideas so I'll continue to vote Dem in every single election even though I'm rarely enthused by the person I'm voting for.

By the way, this talk of the Dems' standard now being simply to be better than the Republicans, reminds me of a great old (apocryphal?) story: The legendary comic Milton Berle, who reportedly possessed the largest penis in Hollywood, once participated in a "size contest" with a would-be contender at the Friars Club. But before agreeing, he insisted on one condition: "I only have to show enough to win."

Obama walked into the job with the Status of Forces agreement in place, and if he did nothing at all the outcome would have been the same as it ended up being. Both sides seemed to recognize that we should try and hammer out an additional agreement, so a small remnant could stay behind to train the Iraqi army to protect the still fragile government. Through a combination of indecision and procrastination within the Obama administration on what forces we wanted to leave in country and how was best to go about coming to the agreement with Iraq, the opportunity evaporated. It was always going to be difficult to get anything done because of problems within Iraq, but the Obama administration's approach didn't give them a chance to succeed.

Oh dear, Bill Kristol admits that Obama has done a pretty good job considering what he inherited. So much for Romney's chances of blaming Obama for the economy..... even Kristol isn't buying it.

"They need to focus on the next four years," he said. "If this election is just about the last four years, that's a muddy verdict. Bush was president during the financial meltdown. The Obama team has turned that around pretty well. The Clinton speech at the convention was very important in that way -- how horrible was it four years ago."

So I believe Romney's strategy for the primaries was to be behind early and not worry too much about it and then pour on the money towards the end and make a push as the voting neared. I suspect the same thing in the general. It also worked for Scott Brown in MA a few years ago. So I look for a bunch of money to come in from Romney and his friends over the last 4-6 weeks. I hope Obama is ready for it. This isn't over.

I don't think we've changed at all on Iraq. There was no way Iraq was ever going to end up as a friend of the U.S. or our Middle East allies. It's Shiite and it was going to ally with Iran. That's one of the dumb things about the invasion. We also knew that the Bremer constitution was never going to work. The goal from the start of administration was to get out of Iraq and that is happening. The neo-con myth of Iraq becoming a happy democratic friend of America, where the Shia, Sunni, and Kurds happily worked together under the U.S.-imposed Lebanon constitution was totally impossible, regardless of how long we stayed, how much $ we spent on Iraq, or what we did. The minority Sunni tyranized the rest of the population too long to be easily forgiven and are so much wrapped up in their own myths that they refuse to even recognize their minority status.
