Also, I hate IM in general and never use it so I've never had occasion to think about its impact on relationships.

I've been watching Ken Burns' Civil War documentary again (haven't seen it since I was 12), which has given me to to wonder why we have such an enduring fascination with the Civil War. No doubt there are many compelling reasons, but one that just occurred to me is that the war occurred in that oh-so-brief period between the development of photography and the development of recordable sound. We have such an amazing photographic record of the Civil War, and the images of its most important luminaries - heroes and villains alike - are all too familiar. Think of how familiar Abraham Lincoln's face is to us.

And yet, it is that precise familiarity with his image that makes our complete ignorance of the sound of his voice all the more jarring. The silent photographs perform the distant, mythic Lincoln of our imaginations: when you look at a picture of Lincoln (or Lee or Grant or a hundred others), it is as looking upon an apparition, a ghost, a presence with the profoundest sense of absence.
