Drexel has an amazing program for its employees: if you purchase a house within a certain radius of the campus, they give you $20k towards it. My friend basically got a free, enormous downpayment for the new house he just had built there

Not uncommon for many well endowed private institutions in areas where property prices make it tough for faculty to buy homes. The particulars vary, but I do think in general the university gets money back when the property sells. Other places have really cheap faculty housing, and in some cases, the faculty housing is pretty swank.

Perhaps. Jobs in academia are pretty tough to come by these days--depending on the field, you can easily find more than 100 applicants for even pretty shitty jobs. Getting tenure is pretty sweet, I won't deny it, but you'll likely make less than a high school teacher. (Your job is easier, though you'll still find yourself spending plenty of weekends and evenings grading and doing all that kind of stuff.) When inflation comes back, we're going to get killed. I wouldn't encourage anyone to go into higher education.

It's all a tradeoff I guess.

she's not faculty, and prop taxes there are cheaper there than most burbs. just a great deal to try and improve the area
