early polling suggests Ryan should definitely consider trying on a pleated skirt

Romney might have been right when he introduced Ryan as the next president. I do not think it helps Romney, but it might open a discussion around fixing medicare, medicaid and social security. At least it might show some light on the truth about these programs and how failure is inevitable. Perhaps exposing this trifecta of political third rails will open the eyes of the population that will have scaled back benefits and eliminated. Unfortunately, the baby boomers, many of whom confess bewilderment that these program still exist as they do, will destroy what is left of social security long before most of us arrive at a point to collect anything. Then again, "we" have had our expectations properly set in this matter as well.

I am interested to see how Ryan shows as a candidate in all this. He will get the scrutiny that he brings to the table with his agenda. It is laughable that team Romney seems to be suddenly scrambling to deal with the message change brought on by the VP choice.

One overall positive is the report that Palin gets no airtime this cycle. I wounder if it will drive he bat shit crazy and she will pull some distracting stunt.

They are only destined for failure because we have decided that.

"@fivethirtyeight: If Ryan alienates seniors, working-class whites, etc etc, then the electoral math won't matter. Romney will lose pretty big."

Hopefully, Nate. Hopefully.

When Mitt Romney selected me as his running mate, I knew the Democratic attack dogs would come out in full force. They would say I’m a right-wing ideologue. They would say my views on entitlement programs are far too radical. They would say putting me on the ticket immediately kills Mitt Romney’s chances of becoming president because I’m a liability. But if we’re being honest with each other—if we’re able to put aside the talking points for a few minutes and say what we’re all actually thinking and feeling—I believe we can acknowledge the real truth here.

I’m young, I’m handsome, I’m smart, and I’m articulate. And that scares the ever-loving shit out of you. You can pretend like you have this thing in the bag, but you know good goddamn well that this race just got real interesting, real fast.

It’s okay to admit it. You’re frightened to death of me. It might actually be healthy for you to face your fears now rather than later, when Mitt and I are leading by a few points in the polls and it looks like this thing might end badly for you. Face it: I’m not some catastrophe waiting to happen, like a Sarah Palin or a Dan Quayle. On the contrary, you have the exact opposite fear. I’m a solid, competent, some might say exceptional, politician.

Did you get nervous when you read that last sentence? Is it because you know in your heart of hearts that it’s 100 percent true? Is it because, even if you strongly disagree with my beliefs on Medicare, Social Security, women’s rights, and marriage equality, you know my talent as a speaker and my well-thought-out approach to these issues—no matter how radical and convoluted you find them—might just be enough to win over independent voters?

That's dumb and just not true. If there's any fear, it's not because he's articulate and young, it's because of what he could do to the country if he gets elected. Combined with a fear of not "Wow he's a great politician!" it's "This country elected GWB twice, any idiot can win including this guy." The same "fear" there was with Palin.

But looking at it in a detached way, I don't see how this is a good VP choice. I don't see moderate voters going for him at all. But on top of that, this guy will drive a lot of liberals out to vote who might not have voted otherwise.

Well jerz you just posted an Onion article, so I don't really know what the point was. It's funny, I guess, if you're looking for a reaction.

I know it's an Onion article. But I thought it was written by a conservative dude who really believed those things. I guess I miss the point of the article or just don't get it.

Paul Ryan declined to address Obama's charge that he was among House Republicans "standing in the way" of legislation designed to help the drought-stricken heartland. He said only that he would get into "those policy things later."

"Right now I just want to enjoy the fair," he said.
