from this to the 99% of people have id claim, it really is amazing how lazy they were with this. I put more effort into my high school paper about Peter the Great back in the day (He westernized Russia!)

I want to see the real number of people that vote regularly but have no ID. I assure you it's not several hundred thousand. If it is, that just proves how much this law is needed. This is 2012, get a freaking ID.

And to the story of the 97 year old who loves to vote and blah blah blah. For fuck's sake, liberals, go to her house, drive her to the id center, pay for the id, and buy her some lunch.

There are, what, 15 of those people in the whole state?

There are 758,000 without id, which was released by the state. 9.2% of registered voters. This is at odds with what the secretary has publicly stated. About half of those are 'frequent' voters.

186k of those without id live in pa. A large portion of those are elderly blacks.

Why is there a second necessity to prove who you are? You already registered. That's the proof. Other countries that require it also don't require people to actually register. They also have mandated national id cards.

I saw the 758K number. I am very skeptical of half being frequent voters.

I also know the 186K (they live in Philly is what you meant to say). What can I say dude, if they really want to vote, help them get to an ID center. The IDs are free for poor people no?

It's 2012, if you can't prove who you are and that you have a right to vote, I can't really help you.

Are IDs free? I had to pay 30 bucks last time mine expired and the non-driving licenses were the same price

People are doing that. They're also challenging an illegal law. Feels like I'm talking to a wall. Not everyone grew up or lives the same way as you where one must show id all the time.

And then do you have to prove your poor if they do waive the fee? How? If you are poor is spending time and money to get to the DMV really a good use of your limited resources?

well, now they need to. I show my ID a minimum of 10 times a week.

Housh, laws on the books to get IDs free for poor people.

Having said all this, I am sure that most of this is due to voter suppression attempts by Republicans and I don't think there going far enough in trying to get people IDs. The story I read was that they won't even get the list of these 700 K citizens to the Philadelphia office in charge of getting people IDs so that the office could run outreach.

But seriously, if all the liberals, who have no problem finding "hundreds" of people to bring to the attention of a journalist writing about the evils of ids spent the time actually getting those people IDs, the world would be a better place.

You have to prove you're poor. Have to shoe your birthday cert, which costs money if you don't have one. Pretty impossible for home births, which used to be more common.

How the fuck else is an elderly person, who is somehow able to make it to a polling place as opposed to shut ins, spending their day? They aren't working 40 hours a week.

You're being completely impractical and u sympathetic about the massive suppression of the elderly and black and Asian and Latino vote based on a false idea of fraud. But whatever. I said my piece.

Regardless of whether you consider this good policy, it's going to get overturned. Not before November though.

This will sound potentially whiny and maybe annoying, but basically because of my seizure, I had to turn in my driver's license and sign up for the PennDOT one. I waited like 4 weeks, then people told me to just go to the DMV and get it done, and PennDOT hadn't even processed it yet. The first five weeks of my suspension on driving for the seizure didn't even count because PennDOT didn't process it until May 31st. That's when they told me to turn in my license. I had the seizure April 24th. Basically, if I would have had the seizure in October, I probably wouldn't have been able to vote because I would have had to go far, far out of my way to attempt to get a working identification. It is hands down voter suppression. And if it isn't, it should not be instituted in 2012. It should be worked on until it's perfected.

I have no idea how many people's voting rights this will impact. And that's the exact problem. If you want to make a law, take the time and make the effort to make a pretty solid estimate, and spell it out to the public. Then, when you understand how many people (and what people) are being inconvenienced (and the level to which they are being inconvenienced), you can decide whether more help is needed and what a sufficient amount of time would be to provide that help.

Instead, they took an idea that is perfectly reasonable (It's 2012, you should have a state photo ID), but because they didn't do their due diligence and proposed it when they did, it all went to crap.
