But no "good" politician exaggerates as he has, because he's gone so far it looks like incompetence. Anyone with an ounce of preparation does not suggest 500k jobs/month is what's to be expected. And he made similar absurd suggestions about a target unemployment rate.

If you're to be credible as the "job creator expert wunderkind" candidate, you can't do that. And he did it. Did it almost as if he didn't think at all about it. Which is probably accurate.

I do think that if Romney said something like "The April number was about a third of what we could reasonably expect at this point in a solid recovery," he'd have been on much more solid ground factually while no weaker in terms of the rhetoric.

And maybe this does matter if it feeds the narrative of the guy who will say anything or take any position for his own advantage.

That's the statement of someone who actually knows the subject matter about which he claims expertise. A guy who just blurts out an "expectable" number that's waaayyyyy higher than historical norms is both a subject matter doofus AND a political doofus. A politically savvy, labor economics ignorant candidate would never tie himself so carelessly to an unlikely-to-be-reached figure like that, in a way that suggests "hey, if I'm president, I can produce that kind of result." If I'm team Obama, I find someone to make sure to ask publicly, every day until the election, "what's Romney's specific plan for generating half a million new jobs a month? He's said it's doable - exactly how will he do it?"

This is not a subject like foreign policy, about which he clearly knows almost nothing. This is about the very thing he claims to be really good at.

How about this: we elect Mitt, with the proviso that the day after the very first month in which half a million new jobs are not created, he resigns?

I'm willing to give him a one month probationary period. But no health benefits during that time, of course.

My son is about 1/4 Hispanic, but he will only be allowed to check that box if he speaks Spanish natively. Otherwise it's bullshit. You need to have a connection to the culture.

arizona becomes yet another state to ban funding to planned parenthood, and also to purposely misunderstand what planned parenthood does for 1/6 of all women. brewer signed it the same day courts blocked a similar texas law.

what a bunch of idiots.

Gary Johnson got the Libertarian nomination for president. I honestly can't figure out whom he'll hurt more if he's able to get attention. The guy is a good politician, and actually has a track record; his governorship is probably more impressive than Romney's, certainly if you omit Romneycare.

Parliamentary elections in Greece appear to have returned a result that may result in them being unable to form a government, and if they do manage to cobble together a coalition it looks like it will be unstable and unclear whether it will support continued austerity or not.

Hollande has beaten Sarkozy, so France and Germany are no longer on the same page regarding the way forward for the Eurozone in the various economic crises.

Interesting times coming in Europe.

Greece should have just defaulted and left the Euro. Amazing how badly they were influenced by France and Germany.

Leaving the Euro is a lot easier said than done and would have done a lot of damage to the economy.

So are the requirements imposed on to Greece by the EU for that loan. Things would get worse, but they'd also get better quicker too.

This is just what Mitt needs - another Bain fuckstick insisting economic inequality in the US isn't disparate enough, on a book tour, no less.

Germany should put two fingers up and just say they're going back to the Mark. I understand them having some guilt, as they should, but jeez there's only so far you can be expected to go.

That's basically what the world realized about Germany in the 1940s

You're supposed to stop taking Ayn Rand seriously when you're 17. There's a big difference between Adam Smith and Friedrich Nietzsche.
