That would be a very real possibility. Used to run into this on Unix boxes from time to time when the NTP client (which syncs the local system clock with a centralized source) stopped working for whatever reason.
I ended up paging through my entire inbox manually and found an archived Google Buzz conversation message dated 2/13/2010 that inexplicably became marked as unread. Using the "select all" button and then clicking "mark as read" didn't help.
