Now we can move onto the 9/11 responders bill. Oh wait, your team is blocking it.

Can you tell me why?

People who give a crap about social issues always amaze me. Real legislation...as if the tax bill that is going to have a huge impact on the country's economy is small potatoes compared to whether gay people can serve in the armed forces or whether hispanics can morph into citizens if they learn the right cheat code on nintendo.

This sounds heartless. I really would like to believe that I'm misreading this.

That's part of his thesis: since the economic differences between the parties are relatively small (itself true because the Ds are now roughly as dependent on business contributions) the Rs can win with culture war campaigns. What I doubt is that voters are quite as materialistic in their voting decisions as Frank seems to think they are.

You know why. To get a vote on the tax bills, which was the most important issue facing the lame duck congress, the Senate GOP decided to stick together on every vote whether the bill was something they supported or not.

so obama signed the tax bill. I'll bet no one is happier about this getting done two weeks before 2011 than payroll systems programmers.

Yes jh, thank god they saved the rich that horrible 3% tax hike. Do you know that tax cut will help produce somewhere between .1% and 0% increase in jobs!?!? Hot dog!

The Republicans are so eager to lecture on social issues that influence the only the individual's private life.

But when it comes to matters of public safety, health, and well-being, they really don't give a crap.

Stopping insurance companies from denying health care to sick children? No.

Providing financial aid to the people that put their lives at risk on 9/11? Nope.

Ratifying a treaty that will help prevent another arms race between the US and Russia? Sorry.

I'm going to say it again. The Republicans in the House and Senate are sociopaths. Amoral people that care only about their own power and personal gain.

the republicans have acted like petty fools so they wouldn't see the tax rate increase a couple of percent back to what it was for income over 250k. everyone was already getting a tax cut, but they wanted to ensure their pals got more than their fair share. they disrupted the lives of tons of people by refusing to extend UC for many who were already entitled to it. i just spoke with a lady who was evicted from her apartment yesterday because her UC ran out and she was unable to afford her damned rent. that is directly due to this stunt. the sky was not falling for those profiting by record numbers and yet it became their rally call that somehow keeping the status quo would 'save' the economy. what could improve the economy is not the stuff for which they cared about in that bill, but it will be the stuff they held up.

please don't tell me i'm the one that doesn't care about economic issues.

rights of citizens, however, immediately affects the lives of many people who would be able to stop lying to their fellow servicemen, who could get coverage for ailments, who would be on a path to citizenship, etc. i fail to see how these life-changing events are meaningless

All the rhetoric you hear about spending cuts is "earmarks", etc. Those spouting such rhetoric are not serious minded about effectual spending cuts. To cut spending in any substantive way, you have to take on the ol' budgetary Goliath...

"article" - as if it were a "news" story, potentially containing "facts"

how typical that meandering self-congratulatory drivel is of the WSJ Opinion page

it's the upscale version of the fox news piece last week informing fox derrieres that hollywood luminaries like Barbra Streisand are 'disappointed' in President Barry & are turning their backs on them, implying they would favor a more conservative administration, when the quotes from the article make clear they're dissatisfied mainly with Obama's conciliatory timidity.

"god bless those poor ditzy garment workers. They can't even comprehend a million dollars, much less fathom taxes on a pile of money that high! Obviously they want to have no part in burdening their economic superiors with any ideas they might have for financing our nation's governance. After all it's important for the sanctity of ALL americans' dreams and opportunities that we pretend a hefty share of the upper 0.5% of americans' good fortune owes primarily to their merits rather than their god damned dumb luck "
Yes, but in a double utley you can put your utley on top they other guy's utley, and you're the winner. (Swish)

There's really no excuse for blocking START. I suppose some may consider this a meaningless social issue along with DADT, but I kinda think nuclear proliferation is a bigger deal than tax cuts.

They're trying to invoke cloture on DADT in the Senate right now.

Lieberman spoke for repeal, McCain for the homophobes (both very briefly). Weird in a couple ways.

I don't think it's more important than the tax cut bill because I don't know how much it will actually do to prevent nuclear proliferation, but the concerns with passing the treaty seem to be more procedural than substantial, which I don't really get.
