I've thought about this a lot. I think we should all be given emergency contact buddies.
This is a real concern. A lot of us are Facebook friends, so we'd probably figure out if someone died. Many aren't though.

Uninstall and reinstall the Flash Plugin for firefox. You'll be good to go.

Had this problem before, that's what did it for me, sorry Ed.
Make sure you uninstalled the plug in for Firefox and not IE.
Other than that, I would search "no sound in firefox" on google and go through them one by one. GL
