We're taking the kids to NYC for VoxJr's birthday. Must-do's are the Nintendo store and the Times Square Toys R Us, because he gets to pick out his birthday present. We vetoed the Statue of Liberty because of time constraints, and the elevator is broken right now instead the Statue (yeah, I'm NOT hauling BabyVox up 10 flights of stairs).
We did the Top of Rockefeller Center in May. Have thought of Empire State Building, we're waiting to see what the weather is going to be.
Museum of Natural History is on the short list of things to do if it's raining. Art museums are OK, too, if they are as kid-friendly as the Philadelphia Museum is... (IMO, it's very kid-friendly except for the special exhibits).
Restaurant ideas are welcome too.
Museum of Natural history is great, but if you don't have a plan, it's overwhelming. We took Lil' Vulture there last summer, and it definitely wore her out. If you're kids have seen Night at the Museum, they will probably want to see stuff from that movie. And, I can't imagine not seeing the dinosaurs. Lil' Vulture was fascinated by the prehistoric man exhibits, in part because prehistoric man (and woman) were naked.
When we go back, I'd try to work in a planetarium show, mostly because it will get everyone off their feet.
I'm a little leery of shows at this stage because BabyVox is too little to sit still and VoxJr gets skittish at strange things. I'm getting a good list together. Taking a subway ride is on the list too, more for BabyVox than Voxjr, but VoxJr seems to want to as well (we took PATCO to Philly last year just for the ride).
I could show up and argue with Vox, if that would entertain the kids...
I might recommend Coney Island for the boardwalk and aquarium, but it's pretty far from the other stuff you're planning to see--if you come back when it's warmer (and the kids are a bit older), that might be a neat trip, particularly if it's a multi-day visit. Plus in summer you could catch a Cyclones game there, which is great fun.
Restaurants... I like taking out-of-towners to the Carnegie Deli or another of the great midtown delis, all roughly around 54th St and 7th Ave. There are also places like the Hard Rock Cafe and other tourist spots around there--though to me that kind of defeats the point of eating in NYC.
My friends who came in August, with their four (!) young kids including an infant, vetoed the Statue of Liberty for the exact same reason. And we took them to the Carnegie, which I think they enjoyed.
