We're taking the kids to NYC for VoxJr's birthday. Must-do's are the Nintendo store and the Times Square Toys R Us, because he gets to pick out his birthday present. We vetoed the Statue of Liberty because of time constraints, and the elevator is broken right now instead the Statue (yeah, I'm NOT hauling BabyVox up 10 flights of stairs).

We did the Top of Rockefeller Center in May. Have thought of Empire State Building, we're waiting to see what the weather is going to be.

Museum of Natural History is on the short list of things to do if it's raining. Art museums are OK, too, if they are as kid-friendly as the Philadelphia Museum is... (IMO, it's very kid-friendly except for the special exhibits).

Restaurant ideas are welcome too.

Museum of Natural history is great, but if you don't have a plan, it's overwhelming. We took Lil' Vulture there last summer, and it definitely wore her out. If you're kids have seen Night at the Museum, they will probably want to see stuff from that movie. And, I can't imagine not seeing the dinosaurs. Lil' Vulture was fascinated by the prehistoric man exhibits, in part because prehistoric man (and woman) were naked.

When we go back, I'd try to work in a planetarium show, mostly because it will get everyone off their feet.

I'm a little leery of shows at this stage because BabyVox is too little to sit still and VoxJr gets skittish at strange things. I'm getting a good list together. Taking a subway ride is on the list too, more for BabyVox than Voxjr, but VoxJr seems to want to as well (we took PATCO to Philly last year just for the ride).

I could show up and argue with Vox, if that would entertain the kids...

I might recommend Coney Island for the boardwalk and aquarium, but it's pretty far from the other stuff you're planning to see--if you come back when it's warmer (and the kids are a bit older), that might be a neat trip, particularly if it's a multi-day visit. Plus in summer you could catch a Cyclones game there, which is great fun.

Restaurants... I like taking out-of-towners to the Carnegie Deli or another of the great midtown delis, all roughly around 54th St and 7th Ave. There are also places like the Hard Rock Cafe and other tourist spots around there--though to me that kind of defeats the point of eating in NYC.

My friends who came in August, with their four (!) young kids including an infant, vetoed the Statue of Liberty for the exact same reason. And we took them to the Carnegie, which I think they enjoyed.

We'll keep Coney Island in mind for next year -- I'm thinking about taking the kids for an overnight trip so that we could get an early start on the Statue of Liberty.

Food is more for us -- VoxJr is the pickiest eater in the world, although babyVox will eat almost anything, including pickles and lemons. I'll mark down the Carnegie, for all the times I traveled up there for work, I never made it there, and I love deli. Love.

TV -- we drive up and park at the Port Authority. I got spoiled taking Amtrak for several years, and can't see taking NJTransit for the effort it would take to get to and from the station from here.

I don't remember parent/teacher conferences after elementary school. Pretty sure my parents never went to any after I finished middle school at the latest.

Of course, I was a model student; I didn't turn into a degenerate until college.

I know this guy. He turns 100 on Monday. He's having multiple birthday parties in town. He still lives at home, still sharp as a tack but he doesn't have great vision so he can't drive.

This girl was responsible for the intro/conclusion and editing of our final group paper. Easiest assignment in the group. Today she hands me the final draft. Spelling and grammatical errors abound (one of the writer's isn't a native English speaker, we knew going in that his contribution would have to be edited for clarity, no big deal) plus she wrote both of her parts using the passive voice liberally. I'm disgusted. I wouldn't have handed a paper like this in to a high school class.

I hate group projects.

I sent out a mass email update about the volunteer work I do to about 70 people. It was the 4th or 5th one I have sent this semester. I titled it "It Is In My Jeans." I totally missed the sexually innuendo until a buddy called me out on it. Oops.

In elementary school I had a Vietnamese kid in my class named Tam, but our P.E. teacher always called him Charlie and none of us understood why. "Come on up here, Charlie, I don't want you walking behind me", he'd say.
How dare you interrupt my Lime Rickey!
