So marginally better. But not by much.

Were these from 1998 or something?

That's exactly who I don't want to be when I teach.

Also, awkward: he rubbed a pregnant girl's stomach without asking. He just... did that... :|

What's the class? I'm gonna guess psychology or a related discipline.

I also want to know the class. I think psychology is a good guess, TV, but I think an Education professor is equally likely.

The "socialist authors" rant suggest to me like it may be a type of politics or economics course. But I may be projecting based on my own experiences.

There's no such thing as a hott person in a Calculus class. I've been in 4 of them. :(

Going to a college roommate's wedding this weekend. How much is reasonable for a young, single fellow like myself to give as a gift? I got invited with my two old roommates on the same invitation, so we are probably just getting one card and throwing cash in it.

The thing is on Long Island on Labor Day itself, so they lose some money off the gift for that inconvenience. And I already blew a bunch of money at the bachelor party, although I'm sure that doesn't count for much of anything in the bride's eyes.

Is $100 a piece enough? $150? $200? How does this work? It's probably going to be a very nice wedding. Fancy yacht club or something.

Friends you'd put in your own wedding or at least strongly consider (200+, date or not)

Friends you like (150 with a date, 100 without)

Friends you don't like but for some reason are going to their wedding (100 with a date, 75 without)

Older cousins (100, but adjust based on how much you know about their financial situations)

Younger cousins (125)

Cool group gifts you can give that can somewhat defray the fact that you spent a little less...

TIVO plus a year subscription
Season sports tickets (but that's only if you hate the bride and love the groom)
Wine fridge stocked with wine (underrated, shows some effort and you can probably get away with 100 a piece).
Bar stocked with liquor (better with more than 3 people)

I stopped giving cash to my friends's weddings around the time of my wedding because it seemed like it was just each of us extending 200 dollar loans to the other person.

If any of them were at yacht clubs, then yes you did. Otherwise don't sweat it. As long as you try to adjust in some fashion based on date or not, then your conscience should be clean.

I gave 150 to an acquaintance (professional association member, son of a friend of my parents). Brought a date. Reception was at the Ritz-Carlton. 7 course meal, not buffet or family style. I felt like I undergave and I don't really know the guy that well.

Is there a if you are more well off (but saddled with massive debt), you should give more policy there too?

$100 is a good amount. Of course, this needs to be adjusted according to locale. A wedding is going to cost a lot more in like NY than it will in Arkansas and therefore you would give different amounts. But generally speaking, for an old acquaintance, $100 is good, especially if they couldn't even bother to give you your own invitation.
"I tell all kids not to use that word. If they're 29 and they win the World Series, I think they can say that.
But I definitely would say to all the kids out there, 'Kids, it's a bad word. Don't say it. And I'm dead serious.' "
