What is the appropriate thing to do in a situation like that? Shouldn't you notify authorities or something?

Sounds like he kicked the bucket. That must suck being dead for that long and nobody even knowing about it except your neighbor who suspects you might be dead. Reminds me of Layne Staley.

when it happened to my friend, I think he either called the police or the landlord when the smell got really bad.

Mid-late 40s, pretty badly overweight. Self-employed attorney; I'm assuming he has staff (i.e., secretary) who would miss him if he were gone without notice, but who knows?

He might just be on vacation...

Call the cops. Check on the well-being calls for stuff like this are pretty routine. And the police generally have to be notified if someone is found dead in their apartment anyway. I'm not sure where you live and what their policy is, but generally you wouldn't even need to speak to the police (unless you wanted to).

Apparently my wife saw someone go up there within the last week, maybe to water plants or something?

I'm now almost sure he's on vacation.

UPDATE: He's alive, or at the very least someone was up there earlier tonight. So if there was a corpse, they found it.
