Well I have the drunk part down but for some reason I feel like I am in good behavior. Usually when I go into the crazy drunk posting mode it's after a night of drinking at bars and being all wound up even after getting home.

Do your realize how true this is? Well you obviously do but it's actually crazy. I mean there are guys on here that know more than me but basically among my friends and family and stuff I am usually the one they go to. I restrain myself from trying to make other people feel stupid when it comes numbers and stuff. It's amazing the knowledge you can get from just reading other peoples thoughts and each of the Phillies message boards have people that are something like teachers.

I sometimes just play dumb about certain things when I am having baseball discussions with my friends because I am just happy that I know people that like sports. Like if someone says that Doug Glanville was their favorite Phillie I don't have it in me to say "he sucked" then explain why. It would just be cruel.

i have no problem when people talk about their favorite guys because i've got a soft spot in my heart for Greg Dobbs if only because i like yelling "DOBBS!!!" when he does something good. or because i like Chooch because he's such a likable guy. or that i just like Scott Eyre because when he sets to pitch he always sets in this kind of robotic motion that i think looks awesome.

but i have a problem when someone tells me Juan Pierre was the MVP of the 2003 Florida Marlins, a team that had Pudge Rodriguez, Mike Lowell, Derrek Lee and Luis Castillo hitting behind him in the lineup

my friend got pissed at me because i said "that's just wrong" to my other friend, like i was being rude for saying something wrong was wrong. his argument was that it was all opinion and that i can't call someone's opinion wrong. well, my explanation was, "in my opinion" is implied by anything that comes out of my mouth. obviously "that's just wrong" is my opinion and it's a waste to preface it.

but you know and i know that it's not actually opinion in this case. but regardless, i don't know why i bother in such cases.

mainly it bugs me because it'd be so easy for me to show these guys certain sites or whatever that they should read but i know they wouldn't even bother, or that they'd still harbor these ass-backwards thoughts about baseball regardless

so i feel like a dick, but you can't really say "i've read more about baseball than you'll ever know" in any terms without coming off that way

Yeah, poor guy. But if you invite Zolecki, you have to invite Murphy and Lauber and Martino, and you know how those three can get in a crowd.

Martino is like Stifler's brother....he's there and wants to be cool but he's just an underage pest

The problem is in ordinary usage opinion has two different meanings. One is subjective--in my opinion, Sushi tastes good. Or in my opinion, Bubba Ho-Tep is a better movie than Godfather II. You can't really argue with me that I like Godfather II better than Bubba Ho-Tep, because I don't.

On the other hand, there's the usage of opinion that deals with things that may or may not be subjective. In my opinion, the Phillies were the best team in major league baseball in 2008. But someone could say that the Red Sox won more games with a tougher schedule, blah blah blah. The argument there of course is over the metric. I use WFC, while the other guy is using wins over a season.

But we really should not use the word opinion if we're talking about things that are clearly objective. Someone who says in my opinion, Elizabeth II is the Queen of England isn't really using the term correctly. The more appropriate term in that context is belief.

This issue also comes up when discussing morality--if we do not have certain knowledge of morality, are moral views beliefs or opinions?

So there are statements where the term opinion is clearly correct, and others where belief is the correct term, but a whole lot of statements where either could be used. "In my opinion, the Phillies will win the NL East in 2009" and "I believe the Phillies will win the NL East in 2009." have the same meaning.

The comments are pretty good by Internets standards.

I showed my 4 year old keyboard cat, that was a mistake.

You are lucky-- my 4 year old won't stop talking about how jet fuel doesn't burn hot enough to melt steel.
