Gov. Blagojevich taken into federal custody

The list of crap he was involved in is amazing.

Brazen.

A baseball connection too:

The charges also include alleged attempts by the governor to influence the Tribune editorial board.

The governor threatened that if the Tribune didn’t support the governor, he wouldn’t approve the sale of Wrigley Field.

The guy is such a crook. I hope he rots in jail. I may go egg his house during lunch.

Looks like the Lt. Governor is a Hoya. Hopefully the Jesuits imparted better morals on him.

That's one word. I'd use three: "incredibly fucking stupid." He had Pat Fitzgerald, the guy who busted George Ryan and ran the Plame investigation, on his ass.

Josh Marshall uses both our words, actually:

Even setting aside the primordial level of corruption of trying to sell the senate seat of the President-elect of the United States, I never fail to be amazed at the brazenness and stupidity of some political crooks. I mean, I think everyone involved in politics or interested in political corruption in the country had to know that Blagojevich's phones were tapped and probably his offices were bugged, and that Pat Fitzgerald had him under the craziest level of scrutiny. And he tries to sell the senate seat with that hanging over his head? That's simply amazing. I guess you could say he's just a traditionalist, trying to keep up heritage of Chicago machine politics. But with some of these characters, it must just be pathological.

So Blagojevich is the sitting governor of Illinois still. The legislature needs to impeach him quickly if he refuses to resign on his own. It would be absurd if he ended up appointing Obama's replacement after all this.

Blagojevich took the chief executive's office in 2003 as a reformer promising to clean up Ryan's mess.

Ryan, a Republican, is serving a 6-year prison sentence after being convicted on racketeering and fraud charges. A decade-long investigation began with the sale of driver's licenses for bribes and led to the conviction of dozens of people who worked for Ryan when he was secretary of state and governor.

He will eventually. I'm sure Mayor Daley and a lot of state politicians are laughing. Blago does not have a lot of friends in politics.

He has to call for Blagojevich's resignation you would think. Probably sooner rather than later.

Sen. Richard "The Real Deal" Durbin is calling for the Illinois legislature to hold a special election to elect a successor by a veto-proof margin. A bill would have to pass in order to hold the election, and they could elect a Rahm Emmanuel successor at the same time.

I heard he ran on "changing the level of discourse in politics," but I may be confusing him with someone else.

Fran Drescher wants to be a NY Senator

In the 1 in 1 bajillion chance that this happens, I demand blood to rain from a lacerated sky.

likewise, ruth marcus writes in the WashPost that handing Caroline Kennedy a seat would be a "fairy tale" ending. ross douthat thinks she's guilty of celebrity worship.

in a story which i'm positive is completely unrelated, the newspaper industry is continuing to die.

I think all celebrities should be immediately elevated into political office. Since the whole media world endlessly bleats that they're better than those of us who live our lives in non-Botoxed anonymity, why not just be consistent and give them political power?

edit: Douthat really is a bad mother fucker, and I mean that in the best possible way.

Obama will win in 2012 (regardless who runs against him). I'd be willing to bet money on it. Jindal would be smart to wait for 2016.
