Hey Dems,
Want to talk me out of a vote for Jim Gerlach? I see a dumb-ass view on immigration, typical GOP views on taxes and healthcare, and a semi-enlightened view on energy independence. I'm hoping this guy is basically a moderate Northeast GOP member? Are we talking closer to Olympia Snowe or Rick Santorum?

Disclosure, I was an intern for his 2004 and 2006 opponent Lois Murphy.

Probably closer to Snowe, but will toe the republican party line when they ask him to(flip-flopping on a vote to build refineries and lessen environmental regulations protections). Can be principled, but isn't especially grand in my view. For the war from day one, still for it. Into the environment, except for the above vote. Part of some moderate republican groups, rated fairly in the middle by most groups.

Roggio is good people on the other side though. Up to you sir. I didn't realize you were in my district. The district itself is an abomination, it's ridiculous that the borders are drawn the way they've been.

my predictions are pretty close to j-hoya's: maybe a few more EVs for Obama, about 52 percent of the popular vote and a 5.5 percent win margin. About as big as possible given the politics of the country.

The Dems don't get to 60 in the Senate, I think, but maybe that guess arises out of my doubts that their doing so would be a good thing.

It is a LUDICROUS district, I just learned about it this week. I moved in this year and finally got around to learning more about it. It now finally helps me understand the term gerrymander.

Also, from the inside, how the hell did you guys not win the year of the Dem (2006) after finishing as close as you did in 04.

Not to preempt pacino, and he can give a more local, race specific answer, but an awful lot of our most endangered incumbents survived in 2006 (Shays, Pryce, Wilson, Reichert, Gerlach). These were people who knew they had tough races for a year in advance of the election, did the fundraising work they needed to, hired the right consultants and staff people, and worked the hell out of constituent services.

Many of the ones who lost were largely people who were involved in scandals, or didn't realize they were in a race until way too late in the cycle.

I was only there for 2006 in Narberth and then Reading. I feel it was entirely a result of a poorly run campaign. It focused WAYYYY too much on stressing abortion rights and on getting out the vote in Montgomery County, where Murphy had the votes. The campaign opened their Chester and Berks offices too late in the game, and then opened them in bad spots , in my view. They didn't try to take advantage of the city of Reading voters at all, and didn't seem to understand the language of people in Berks/Chester. That's just my view. Abortion and medicare part D ain't going to win it in those counties. It's not part of the T, but still.

Also, a case wasn't definitvely made that Gerlach was the wrong choice for the 6th. You have to say why they're the wrong choice and why you're the right one. I thought not tying him to the Iraq War was a horrible decision. Who cares how much he was for it (he was for it, FWIW), pound away at that issue. That was what won it for most Democrats that election season, and they avoided it like the plague. Gerlach ain't the best Republican to attack as 'toeing the line' because he actually is a bit of a moderate, but there's a distinct issue where he did.

j-hoya,

Where is the best place for small donors to support their party, especially in a non-election year? The national committee, the senate or congressional committees, or even a third party action committee?

I'd go local, and I'd focus on individual candidates.

Hi TV, during election years I do target specific candidates; I was wondering which war chest is most important in "off" years.

Depends where you live. If you live in one of these districts where the Dems have picked up seats in the last cycle or two (PA-7, PA-8, PA-10, maybe soon but hopefully not NJ-3), I'm sure they'd appreciate the money more than the national committees will.

If you live in the city, or have a very safe rep, or you don't like the member, then I guess I'd suggest the DCCC, since they're going to have 60+ districts with members who are either freshman or only once reelected that they will have to protect. Or the DSCC since they'll be around the 60 number and there's no way the DCCC would actually lose the house.

Also, you can look into going even more local. Don't know if you're active at all with your town/city politics, but that's the easiest way for people to get involved. My dad is a committeeman for our voter precinct and he loves being able to help out leading up to the elections, and then being at the town GOP party on election night.

Thank you both, j-hoya and TV. I live in the PA-1, so I guess my Representative isn't going anywhere. I'll look into finding some local candidates who could use early money, and/or sending some support to the national congressional/senate committees.

By the way j-hoya, I didn't mention my affilliation...do I type like a Democrat?

Strange but true: even with a (formerly) american mother, I had always impicitly assumed that the term gerry mander was named after some fuck wit unionist politician in Nor'n Ireland, on account of the frequency with which the term was used throughout my childhood on the radio. Only today, before I'm about to make some elaborate joke about ireland coming up with all the best ways to screw the electorate, do I check and find out it's some damn bostonian.

(we definitely invented boycotting tho'. So we've got that going for us.)

Mind you, I also thought the gelegnite on lord mountbatten's boat was a jelly like substance, and I couldn't understand how he got into a wee rowboat without noticing the dodgy bomb-like substance on the outside of his boat. Kids think the craziest things.

The polls opened in Cherry Hill at 6 am. I got there at 545 and was seventh in line. By the time they got started, there were 30 people there.
