Look, my friends, this is the new POLITICS THREAD

Just read this quote from McCain from the debate

In last night's debate, John McCain claimed that ACORN "is now on the verge of maybe perpetrating one of the greatest frauds in voter history in this country, maybe destroying the fabric of democracy."

Um...what? Maybe destroying the fabric of democracy?

Reminded me of this:

Dr. Michael Hfuhruhurr: Would you read that last bit back to me? I'm afraid it might make me sound pompous to your readers.

Olsen: 'My brilliant research in brain transplantation is unsurpassed, and will probably make my name live beyond eternity'.

Dr. Michael Hfuhruhurr: Oh, no, no; that's good. But take out the 'probably'. It makes me sound wishy-washy.

The earned income tax credit, which was championed by Bill Clinton and had some Republican support I'm pretty sure, is a refundable credit, meaning poor people can get back money they never paid in taxes in the first place.

It may or may not be socialism, but it's not a new concept for us.

BTW, who cares if it's "socialism" or not. We should care if it will work.

What standards do you have for whether such a policy "works?"

Whether it helps the working poor exit and/or stay off public assistance programs. Whether it helps the working poor avoid foreclosure or rent delinquency. There's two possibilities.

I've never heard an argument "against" the EITC. It's probably the most popular and least controversial anti-poverty initiative this country has ever developed and implemented. St. Reagan Himself called it “the best anti-poverty, the best pro-family, the best job creation measure to come out of Congress.”

The cliche is that "liberals like it because it makes work pay, conservatives like it because it rewards work." Maybe I'm a weird liberal because I believe there's a legitimate case for paternalism in public policy--expecting recipients of public assistance to work if they're able strikes me as a fairly conventional facet of the social contract--but both justifications sit well with me.

i have never seen a black person eat a watermelon.

The funny thing is, around here, we eat a lot of Watermelon (in fact, Bill Clinton and Mike Huckabee's hometown of Hope, not far from here is famous for its watermelon, and even has a Hope Watermelon Festival) and fried chicken, and no one really sees it as a racial thing, as far as I can tell. No one over the age of two (except for me) drinks kool aid though. It's either Coke, Dr. Pepper, or Sweet Tea. And if you're unwilling to eat that stuff, well, good luck getting elected around here.

And ribs? If you don't like ribs, well, I don't wanna talk with you. Fall off the bone delicious ribs, dry rub, sauce, whatever, man, ribs are good. Really, is there a person in the world who doesn't eat ribs?

Shit. Now I'm hungry.

I've always wondered if African American's have been robbed of bringing us awesome food because of this stereotype - whether it's chain resturants or whatever - based on making good stuff like fried chicken, ribs, BBQ, whatever. I mean, damn, if you have this good assed family recipie get me of that and get rich off of it.

My real point is that the stereotypical African American food isn't really seen that way in the south. We all eat that stuff.

Some cuisines don't seem to travel well--there is probably some decent illegal pit barbecue in W. Philly--a friend of mine used to work for the City Department of Health and closed one down about once a week. But the ribs I've had in the north simply do not compare to what you can get even in a mediocre rib joint down here. So, up north, few, if any decent rib joints, down here, no decent pizza or sandwiches.

I knew it wasn't your point, it just got me thinking about what I posted. I think the point is that the food you describe is regional, not ethnic.

Do I win for boiling it down to one sentence?

For ribs, go to De Breaux's in the Overbrook train station parking lot.

I can't find the whole McCain one on YouTube yet.

It's here - http://wcbstv.com/topstories/al.smith.dinner.2.842562.html - titled McCain on Top of His Game at Al Smith Dinner

Seriously, watch both. Hilarious. I'll put in the McCain one in the morning when I find a decent version on YouTube.
