Because the Democrats have the good cards this year. Usually the Republicans would deal with that as they did last night--by trying to personally destroy the Dem. McCain, maybe to his credit, is trying to imply that he'll do the same things, just that he'll do them better because he's got the track record of reform and he's him.

But that's what doesn't work about this speech. He's triangulating, like Clinton did, but the Republicans in the room there don't want that, and their evident lack of excitement dampens the message to the outside world. I think.
