When Random Thoughts hits 8, you're gonna see

Relative to yesterday, there's a definite lack of traffic around here. I guess everyone is making up the work they didn't get done yesterday.

My iphone has significantly increased my quality of life. Coupled with my iMac, I have nearly all the important information I need to run the household whereever I am. It syncs with iCal, so I have a record of all doctors appts, etc back to when I started using it (ex. -- on the phone w/VoxJr's neuro, and he wants to know when his last test was -- it's on the calendar). Also useful when at the doctors scheduling appts.

All my family addresses, all the email addresses of VoxJr's schoolmates' parents and their phone numbers.

Internet (and google maps, my poor-girl's gps substitute)

Camera for taking pics of the kids when they are being cute (or not cute)

Text msgs for BSG meetup and updates of local disasters.

And email, for keeping in touch with Vox and various extended Vox family members. Also good for shopping and to-do list (I email them to myself, so if I'm out I can remember what to pick up or do). It's hooked up to my personal email account (IMAP), so I don't lose messages.

Oh, and the phone itself.

All for $60 a month. Way less expensive than the phone plus data plans I was looking at before for a blackberry.

All I know is the iP0wn is still a problem for people who don't have thumbs the size of pencil erasers.

There's no way I could use one to type e-mails regularly like I have to for work on my BlackBerry - yet the BlackBerry Thunder prototype basically looks like an iPhone with a BB and Esc button on the bottom.

Sorry, last bill was $67. I think it's a bargain when I was paying $50+ for just phone before this. And data for a blackberry from cingular was like $80/month.

I barely post here from a normal computer.

the iPhone's web browser is the best, though. BlackBerry's blows.

Hernia op went pretty well I think, I am not really even any pain right now as I am pretty well viked up. I don't know how I am going to be able to take a crap though because I can't even fart without feeling the pain.
Do it again!

That's my one issue with it. Well, two if you count that it doesn't get mlb.tv.

Of course, my wife gets so pissed when we're out and I use it simply to check the score that if I actually watched games on it, she'd probably leave me.

I think my blackberry plus data and internet from T-Mobile was 60 bucks plus tax (40 for the voice and 20 for the data). Texting was additional.

RE: Text vs. email

Not only is the computer protocol different, the cultural protocol is also different. Most emails are meant to be replied to at your convenience. Text messaging is more of an immediate need type thing- yo, I need an answer right now- are you coming to this meeting or not??? Or, MEATBALL IT'S BUCKY WHERE THE HELL ARE YOU GUYS PARKED??? That sort of stuff.

I have different alerts for emails v. text messages. So I know if someone is trying to get me with some urgency. Why not just call then?? Because that's even a little different protocol. People can't always answer their phone, but they can usually find somehow to answer a text within a couple minutes.

Phone:Synchronous
Text:Semi-synchronous
email:asynchronous

Each has their place. Just demonstrated this today during my trip to DC. One of my customers sent me an email about a meeting he wants me to attend in NYC tomorrow. Saw it on my blueberry, and was about to leave the house...so I called him on the drive and we discussed. Agreed I would send him my Amex # and he would book our train tickets. Got to DC, emailed him that stuff. He emailed me back a few other backgound docs about tomorrow's meeting which I read at my leisure at lunch. Later I was walking down around the monument, and heard my text chirp-looked at it right away. "CHANGE OF VENUE- JERSEY CITY NOW. STILL ACELA? So I just sent one word back "Drive". Had my phone rang, I would not have even looked at it to see who it was. Wouldn't divert that much attention from my kid during family time.

We effectively used all three forms of communication in the course of a day.

BB browser does suck, but you can install Opera Mini (at least on the Curve) for a slightly improved experience.

This link of photobombing, which is when people intentionally ruin people's photos by doing dumb stuff in the background, made me laugh many times. Beware of bare asses, but it's all in good fun.
