So what does it say about all the big games Rollins has had in the last month when we erased a 7 game deficit? He's a streaky player. When Good Jimmy is locked in, he's awesome. When he's not, he's painful to watch. That's how most guys are. Ask Mets fans about Reyes.

Unfortunately, under stress we humans tend to forget our better second nature and revert to our basic, not-so-good, selves.

It has nothing to do with locked in. Jimmy almost ALWAYS hits his pitch hard. It is judgement.

the pickoff and the 1st pitch groundout after his pitcher is walked in front of him on 4 pitches have little to nothing to do with his application of his physical skills. It has to do with going brain-dead, something that ordinarily is a bit more at a person's discretion.

He's not a green dipsy-do like Reyes, not anymore.
Yes, but in a double utley you can put your utley on top they other guy's utley, and you're the winner. (Swish)

That's a pretty pessimistic view of human nature. Some people thrive on stress and are at their best when the stakes are highest.

The Phils have been "under stress" for at least a month, arguably ever since starting 4-11. They've come through countless times. It's just not happening today. Maybe this kind of stress is qualitatively different--they've never led the division all year, and every time they were there for the wild card they spit the bit--but more likely they're just having a terrible day.

The pitch Rollins swung at was right down the middle. He just missed it.

When Jimmy plays like this, I can't help but think of that game in early September 2005 against the Nationals.

Nats led 4-1 in the ninth, Burrell led off with a single, Howard hit a homer, and then Bell (!) tied it with another homer.

In extras, the Phillies loaded the bases with one out, and Jimmy comes up. The pitcher goes 2-0 on him, and then Jimmy swings at two pitches out of the zone. He should have been taking if the ball was placed on a tee, down 2-0, when a walk gives you the lead. But he was swinging.

I can forgive Burrell's or Howard's defense. Those are physical deficits, and are hard to correct. Jimmy had mental lapses all the time. Those are less forgivable.

It is qualitatively different stress to be the hunted, rather than the hunter, and to be closer to a division title than they've ever been. As to whether it's a pessimistic view, unfortunately, the research shows that stress behavior tends to be worse than non-stress behavior.

I wonder what Rowand's swinging at 2-0 pitches rate is compared to the rest of the league.
