I'm not even really defending Howie. I'm saying I don't think Lurie is a mouth-breathing moron.

All we know specifically is Lurie saying Howie did the 2012 draft, which hasn't been refuted, and Howie saying "I'll take the blame" for Watkins and Marcus Smith. (Which I highly doubt he did over the objections of Reid and Kelly, but OK.) That's it. Well that and all the vague Football Guy #$!&@.

For the media, in particular, to have this fervor to put the guy out on his ass is bizarre.

It would be bizarre in most situations. It's not, because somehow some way the local Eagle mediots feel THEY have a say. That THEY are entitled to demands and having certain expectations met. That's what is so off.

Jeff Lurie wants to win a SB very badly. That we know. And compared to MANY other nfl orgs, the Eagles in his 20+ years have been more good than bad. Fielded a lot of wins and great players. He took a shot on Chip, it went sideways - it didn't work for the Nova-care comfort zone. Howie is his guy. He doesn't need to splain it to anyone or justify it. He knows what Howie does for him and that's it.

And - as if the mediots in Phila. or the fans they incite - know very much about the 31 other franchises and their war rooms? Trent Balke is despised out here. But the media is so different and fans a lot less outraged. They wanted the org to bring in a Holmgren type to consult -

Howie is Banner 2.0. What doesn't everyone get?

Get real about the draft --

If it's all about the draft - then people need to look at the draft history and unpack the facts. Then compare to other teams including those with SB appearances and see how many Danny Watkins and Marcus Smith's those teams had??

In Jeff Lurie's 21 drafts as owner he's had 4 top 10 picks:

Donovan #2
Corey Simon #6
Lane Johnson #4
Mike Mamula #7

He's had eight picks between 11-20

Tra Thomas #11
Fletcher Cox #12
Brandon Graham #13
Brod Bunkley #14
Jerome McDougle #15
Shawn Andrews #16
Jeremy Maclin #19
Nelson Agholor #20

So all these busts? Freddie Mitchell,Marcus Smith III, Danny Watkins - they were all in the 20's. And everyone knows that once you are picking in the bottom 1/3 of the 1st round, you are not going to nail it every time. You just aren't.

The worst non-pick of the Lurie Eagles, was passing on Warren Saap for Mike Mamula. 2nd worst - passing Reggie Wayne for Freddie Mitchell.

After Marcus Smith, were a lot of good players - but not OLBs for a 3-4. They messed up. Allen Robinson, Kelvin Benjamin, Derek Carr and Teddy Bridgewater were all still on the board. They were looking Defense - and OLB. But if you scan the 2nd and 3rd rounds and remainder of the 1st after Smith - there weren't a lot of stars or emerging D stars.

I'm not saying the Birds are an upper echelon drafting org, but you have to be realistic about drafts. And blowing a top 10 is different than blowing #25 overall.

2012 was a solid overall draft. 2014 wasn't too bad other than Smith. 2015 I'm still bullish on Agholor.

Not sure what mediots and fans expect??

I'm sorry guys - its just people spout out "blew the draft" "worst drafts" and there is never any context. Draft slot, what other teams did comparatively. Who else was still on the board.

I feel like we need some pinned/fixed posts with raw data - so that people could reference facts before asserting broad sweeping claims.

I don't know how to credit or detract from Howie in terms of drafts? All draft convo needs some context.

"I do. I really do. I think the pieces are there. Great talent on defense. The strength probably on this team is the defensive line, linebackers, tremendous talent there. I think the skill guys are as good, if not better than most of the National Football League, and there’s guys there who have made a lot of plays, young guys, that have made some great plays for this organization. Re-signing a guy like Zach Ertz, I was excited to get him and Brent Celek both wrapped up, Lane Johnson wrapped up.

And then you start just kinda filling in. A hole here, a hole there, get some depth here, you know, get you a young quarterback possibly, and then you just start developing your talent and you see what happens after that."

I'm gonna think he's talking hypothetically, the way the Eagles have approached the offseason has really been to keep Bradford's value... At a distance? They don't want to publicly say he's who they want and want to say they NEED him because they think it will lose leverage. I really think all of the Bradford talk is just trying to establish leverage, they do have a number in mind and if he can't get close enough to it, they'll let him walk, and they want the fan base to be prepared.

I don't think they're going to sign Bradford. They're going to try and recreate the McNabb era and draft a QB. This buys Pederson time that he may not get if they spend big money on Bradford. Everyone wants their guy, and while Pederson may genuinely think highly of Bradford I don't think he's coming back, save for some sort of team-friendly deal scenario

Remember Andy Reid's 5 year plan? I'm assuming some version of that is Doug's blueprint, only with slightly better talent to start with

Wouldn't surprise me, but I really think this team is much better than the 1998 team. Maybe split the difference and franchise Bradford and take a flier on a third-round QB and/or Daniel

Roman Gabriel
Randall Cunningham
Donovan McNabb
Paxton Lynch / Carson Wentz

Franchise has a proud history of QBs with two last names

I can't see the fans being willing to wait for five years for anyone's plan. If the Birds don't make the POs next season, the heat is going to be on Lurie and Roseman. Another bad season, like this one, and there will be empty seats and fans wearing bags on their heads at games. The media will be right there leading the charge.

Goff will go #2

Wentz may or may not be available at 13(probably not)

Lynch not a top half of the first-rounder
(Brandy) only hinted at Halladay's personal issues during her Hall of Fame speech last July, when she said, "Roy would want everyone to know that people are not perfect. We're all imperfect and flawed in one way or another. We all struggle."

Wentz being there at 13 depends on the Cowboys, unfortunately.

I'm not saying it's the right thing to do OR that it's going to work out. But you know damn well they're in the mindset of Doug being Andy 2.0

That's what I think as well. If Pederson says Bradford is his guy and they break the bank on a contract for him, they are going to have immediate expectations versus bringing in his guy through the draft and gaining more time to build the team he wants.

But doesn't Howie (and Lurie, of course) have the opposite motivation?

No, I think it buys time for Howie too. I think Lurie will do whatever he can to recreate the Reid Magic so if that means drafting a QB in round 1 and moving on for Bradford he will try that.
