It'll drop his cap number less than a million (on average--hard to say until we see the details) and extend the commitment two more years. I don't think the cap figure came into play in the slightest.
I'd be stunned if he has even cap hits for the next three seasons. If I had to guess, there will be a lot of non-guaranteed money in year 3 that he will never see. This feels very similar to DeMeco's extension last year which cut his cap hit in half while creating minimal additional financial commitment on the team's end.
Well we know that it's $6M guaranteed, so there is $7M unguaranteed. He's in his 10th year, so his minimum salary is just under $1M. Unless it's spread out as $1/$1/$5 (possible but unlikely), there's not much of a cap difference for 2016. Even $1.5/$1.5/$4 would be $3.5M versus $5M for 2016. It helps, but it's not much cap relief at all, and it would create a $5.5M hit for 2017 if they cut him then. (IMO a much more likely breakdown is something like $1.75M/$2.25M/$3M.)
My only point is that the cap figure isn't really a factor on this one.
