I just don't understand how we know this. Do teams always interview candidates in the order they prefer them?

Who they wanted "first" is all media speculation.

Pettine would be a really good hire as DC.

He's got that GUS look going on

Gotta disagree. Schwartz arguably has a better track record (have to wonder how much of Pettine was working under Rex) and Schwartz actually improved Pettine's Buffalo defense after replacing him when Pettine got the Cleveland job.

Do they really want to go back to the WIDE NINE though?

As long as it's not being run by an offensive line coach, sure. It's not always an abject disaster.

Schwartz only runs the wide nine on passing downs, and not always.

i'm just worried that schwartz kind of sucks, wide 9 or not. his resume isn't too impressive. 4 top 10 defenses in 14 years

Agree.

He had a good defense in 2014 which was the last year he coached.......so his stock is (too) high.

And Pettine had one away from Rex (that Schwartz then improved upon).

Also worth noting that all four of those top-10 defenses with Schwartz came in 2007 or later (including the last defense he ran), so it's not like he was some guy who had success early and then lived on reputation for years afterwards.

Ultimately, the Eagles would be lucky to have either guy, but I just prefer they hire Schwartz if given the choice.

I can only hope now that the DPed - is like John Harbaugh. Part of the Andy-tree that can exceed his ultimate failure formula. Can't win big against Brady/Belichick, terrible clock management. Unprepared.

thats one way to look at it. Another is that he had 1 from 2009-2014. and it's not like he took slop over in Buffalo, Pettine had Buf at 10 in defense the year before

I need to save "From the Andy Reid school of clock management" as a keyboard shortcut just in case.

Schwartz did an interview with FootballOutsiders over a decade ago discussing the role of analytics in his coaching decisions: Howie probably jerked off to that when he was getting Lurie coffee.

FTR I'm not seeing the appeal, either. You can say that Buffalo's defense got better when he succeeded Pettine, but I'd counter by noting that he had three DL have career years. Once those guys hit the wall (this year) a better defensive coach in Ryan saw that unit crater. So coaching is important, but talent still trumps all.

If he's hired you'll see a lot of the WIDE 9. The difference is the back end: they'll play a lot of Cover 4 to involve the safeties in the run fit and make up for the deficit up front. Traditionally his teams are great against the run and suck against the pass because of this. I thought it was telling when Terryl Austin walked into Detroit and immediately produced two defenses better than anything Schwartz ever did (and this last season he lost Suh and Fairly).

I don't have a preference for Schwartz or Pattine but I would give the 3-4 another shot with a guy who can actually coach it. And it's not like Pettine runs it exclusively. Cox and everyone else will get plenty of chances in 4-3 alignments.
