This deserves a little background. WARNING: PTK length coming

I coached for four years at the small college level (DIII/DII) in PA. Once you join that fraternity you'd be amazed at what you learn about other coaches due to how small it is.

Anyway, there's probably several people that have better Eagles "connections" than I do (I don't have any personally). My low opinion of Howie is based on a combination of what I've heard directly and reading between the lines on Twitter, media, etc.

The main thing I heard directly about Roseman is that he forced out McDermott, mostly because he convinced Lurie that the latter wasn't correctly utilizing guys like Allen, Graham, etc when those names still had a lot of promise attached to them. He also believed that the Eagles needed a scheme change to generate a better pass rush from the Front 4, hence the Washburn hiring.

The problem for me is that Howie basically played fantasy football: he saw that Washburn's Tennessee DL's always put up great sack totals and thought it was a no brainer. Of course, it's not that simple (and never is). In order for his linemen to have the freedom to attack on every snap you have to make concessions elsewhere. Most defensive coaches don't want to do that on an every down basis because you're exposing your secondary so much, hence the reason that Reid couldn't find a single qualified DC candidate that wanted the job and settled on Castillo.

The other piece is the stuff that's said and not said about Roseman through the media. It's telling that so many ex-Eagle personnel guys either openly knock Howie or refuse to comment. You can say they sucked at their job or whatever, but I rarely see this level of bitterness. What's more, I don't think I've ever read a single thing on or off the record praising Howie in any capacity other than his ability to negotiate contracts: that speaks volumes IMO when you compare it to the glowing quotes you got from key Packers employees/players back when Reid was hired, Alabama with Marynowitz, etc.

I call Roseman a Weasel because that's basically what he's been in this organization: he's in Lurie's ear constantly and is an expert political player who's run off some very talented people (CH!P being the biggest). I'm an atheist: I don't give a shit about him being Jewish. It was telling that he didn't leave the organization after he got his balls cut off last offseason: most people with any sense of pride would have walked. Instead he plotted his way to rise back into power. Some of it was easy (Kelly was clearly over his head when it came to understanding NFL roster construction), but that doesn't mean he should have gotten the big chair back.

Having worked in the industry I believe that football isn't anything like baseball: it's not a sport where you can hire a ~ 30 something Harvard grad who's never played and have him do great running the personnel side of things. There's simply so many variables when it comes to how and why players do well that you'll never grasp if you haven't played/coached. To that point, I'll circle back to Washburn: the casual fan was ecstatic when he was hired because of the numbers his DL registered, while those in the coaching community (I coached with a lot of Eagles fans) were skeptical that Castillo would be able to make it work.

Howie may well be a really good evaluator of talent, but in life perception is reality: if his presence is the reason the Eagles can't get the best coaches/personnel people to work for them than he needs to go. I certainly don't blame him for Jarrett and Watkins (those were Reid picks IMO) and there's no question that 2013-2014 were heavily influenced by CH!P (coaches can and should influence the types of players they want since they're the ones determining scheme), but the reality is that if the best the Eagles can do is Reid's OC and a bunch of ex-Eagles/Rams coaches (Childress, etc) than Roseman is a net negative who is hurting this franchise.

Plus he's a fan of the blue-faced blast off and that's not the kind of thing you want around your franchise.
