With addition of Achter, Quinn, Ramos and Cordero the 40 man roster is at 37. "If" they had to be protected, I'd have protected Tirado for sure and probably Tocci too. Achter seems like a waste of time to me.

I highly doubt Tocci get's claimed. He's so raw and I can't see a team wasting a roster spot on him all year when he probably would still need AT LEAST two more seasons in the minors after this year. Tirado though is exactly the kind of guy you claim. Bring his 100mph fastball to spring training and see if your coaches can work with it. If not, send him back.

I have a 40 man rules question. If Tirado and Tocci both go unclaimed then they don't have to be put on 40 man until next offseason, correct? That would be why the Phillies don't want to add them now despite spaces available. Still, wasting a spot on Achter instead of Tirado seems like an unnecessary risk to me.

So the 40 now includes Asche, Achter, Asher and Altherr.

i think tocci passes through. i don't think it is correct that tirado needs to be protected. we will see.

I agree. To I isn't close to being ready for the big leagues. I'm almost certain you are correct regarding the forty man for unclaimed guys.

August 30, 2011 Toronto Blue Jays signed free agent RHP Alberto Tirado to a minor league contract.

Signed at 16, so he has to play 5 minor seasons before he has to be protected, and he's only played 4, but isn't that the same case for Tocci?

having both severino.g and the new guy seems redundant, especially with tirado unprotected... only logical if one of the soft throwing control artist rhrp is tabbed for inclusion in a giles trade.

bleacher reports seems to have the first list of top unprotected rule 5 prospects. quick summary: of teoscar hernandez, if t.j. rivera, and a bunch of hard throwing relievers with control issues. i think i prefer rivera... would rather have him on the 25 man than sweeney or any other phils utility infield prospects in 2016... plus that takes a nice backup option away from the muts.

tirado officially signed with the jays on aug 30th 2011, AWEEK AFTER THE LAST GAME OF THE SEASON FOR THE GCL JAYS,BUT A DAY BEFORE THE LAST GAME OF THE GCL CHAMPIONSHIP SERIES. since his first assignment was to the jays gcl club, and rule 5.2 says the clock starts the next seaon if your first club's (CHAMPIONSHIP) season ends before you sign, it comes down to this:
does that signing day count as after the gcl jays season, or did it have to be the next day?
would the jays have been be dumb enough to sign him a day too early?

plus the mets took Seth Rosin last year
